The Haggard Scandal Is As Good For Us As Foley
Forget JK's mispeaking. This is a big deal and by tomorrow the MSM will be all over it into the weekend. This guy is one of the chief wingnut xian representatives. He just stepped down from the presidency of a big national evangelical organization as well as stepping down as pastor. And you don't do that unless you know there's proof out there. Haggard is also closely tied to bushco.

This is a great November surprise. Enjoy it!

6. Allegations from a male prostitute
That's he been having a "business" relationship with Haggard for three years.

Haggard stepping down amid gay affair inquiry

By Eric Gorski
Denver Post Staff Writer

DenverPost.com

Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals and founder and leader of the Colorado Springs-based New Life Church, stepped down Thursday following allegations that he has had a three-year homosexual affair with a male prostitute.

Mike Jones, a self-professed male escort, talked publicly of the affair Wednesday morning on KHOW radio. Haggard denied the affair Wednesday night to KUSA Channel 9News.

But today, Haggard stated he could "not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations made on Denver talk radio..."

After consulting with his spiritual counsel and the church's board of overseers, Haggard said, "I am voluntarily stepping aside from leadership so that the overseer process can be allowed to proceed with integrity. I hope to be able to discuss this matter in more detail at a later date."

In the interim, the church's associate senior pastor, the Rev. Ross Parsley, will serve as acting senior pastor of the church.

Haggard's lawyer, Martin Nussbaum, emphasized that Haggard has not admitted to the affair.

Nussbaum said the church's bylaws state that if an allegation of immorality is made, the proper action is for Haggard to step down and put himself on leave.

The Colorado Springs church, with 14,000 members, is the largest New Life congregation in Colorado.

Edit - I did see the other threads, but other than that, never heard of him.

11. Harper's had
a fascinating piece on him within the last couple of years. He's a major player in repuke circles and the religious right. You may never have heard of him before today, but I guarantee you you'll be hearing a lot about him in the next several. In addition, CO has a marriage amendment referendum this cycle and right now it's just about tied. This news stands a good chance of depressing the repub vote across the state.

As I said, this is a very big deal.

Bigger than Dobson. Here in Denver, I'm hearing on the radio that the accuser has voice mails and emails from Haggard.

9News, the Denver station that broke the story, has been working on the story with the accuser for about 3 months.

48. No Because
Not everything mentioning gay subjects is baiting. The post was just speculating on the fallout for *. Speculation can lead anywhere. Just because someone speculates about republican hypocrisy doesn't mean they are gay baiting. Everyone is pretty tolerant around here. With that said, people that want to take offense at this idle speculation are looking to start a flame war. So your queer and your here. Congratulations. Does that mean that this may not have implications on the national stage. Calm down. Or ignore the post.

It is the HYPOCRISY of these people who act like they are moral and supposedly Christ-like and gather support for such things as the anti-gay marriage laws and speak out about homosexuality being a sin. That's what the problem is. It's the fact that they are lying about themselves and acting like others are beneath them simply because they were born as gay people. I do not believe in God ~~ but I would like to say to one of these phony religious liars: "Don't you get it? God made gays, too. Who in the hell are you to judge what is right or wrong about how someone was born when God made them just like he made you or anyone else?" It angers the hell out of me that these phony religious fundies are, first, casting judgment and, second, lying their asses off to do so and lying about a knee-jerk issue such as being gay in order to get votes for the freaking Repuke Party.

It has NOTHING to do with sexual orientation. It has to do with being honest and forthright. Every person is deserving of equal rights in regard to whom he or she loves and whom he or she can legally marry. It's bad enough to work against such rights, but to do so while hiding the fact that one is a member of the group against which one is demanding discrimination is absolutely contemptible.

Just my opinion....

Edit for typo

and you might not that I did not say it was about being gay, but that his 'indescretion' was with another man will have a big impact on that segment of the population in Colorado- and they are NOT an insignificant number, who right wing fundies, particularly in light of the marriage referendum up for a vote in 5 short days.

He is the religious leader of 30 Million evangelicals.

I assume that Haggard is why the Air Force Academy went to the dark side several years back.

I see that Haggard recently served on a panel for the Family Research Council (Tony Perkins)in D.C. The partial list of participants -Senator Frist, Cong. Boehner, Senator Santorum, Senator Brownback (KS), Senator Coburn (OK), Cong. Pence (IN). Can't find a Dem on the list.
