when 11 Democrats broke with their party ........Bush Senior's nominee
The closest vote in modern history is Clarence Thomas' 52-48 victory in 1991, when 11 Democrats broke with their party and voted for President George H.W. Bush's nominee.

How do we find out who these 11 were??? Just curious.

Nelson, Byrd and Johnson are the only Democrats to express support for Alito so far. Twenty-two of the Senate's 44 Democrats voted against John Roberts' confirmation as chief justice last year.

If the pattern continues, Alito may be on his way to the most partisan Senate victory for a Supreme Court nominee in years. The closest vote in modern history is Clarence Thomas' 52-48 victory in 1991, when 11 Democrats broke with their party and voted for President George H.W. Bush's nominee.

2. Here's the complete roll call vote on Thomas

They were mostly from the South. I believe that Dixon (Illinois) was voted out right after and mainly because of his vote for Thomas.

The 11 Dems were:

Boren (D-OK)
Breaux (D-LA)
DeConcini (D-AZ)
Dixon (D-IL)
Exon (D-NE)
Fowler (D-GA)
Hollings (D-SC)
Johnston (D-LA)
Nunn (D-GA)
Robb (D-VA)
Shelby (D-AL)

3. Alan Dixon from Illinois

...was one. He was overwhelmed by the reaction of the women in Illinois. We phoned his office, we protested at his office and we elected Carole Mosley Braun in his place the next year.

Moral of the story....don't fuck with the women of Illinois, we will boot your ass.

Btw...I was one of the protesters, I brought my very young daughter and my grandmother who was in her 70's.

Cheers!
