The Original version of last night's Simpson's
http://youtube.com/watch?v=uS4VFf3rvfE

The really devastating aspect wasn't the deleted line "this looks like Iraq is going to" but the original music over the credits. It sounded like something out of Schindler's List and was a commentary on what our nation has become. Clearly the producers no longer found anything funny about the war on Iraq. Sometimes music is more powerful than words.

1. Isn't the voice of Orson Wells done by the guy who
did the Brain on Pinky and the Brain....

6. Maurice LaMarche
The Brain voice was his Orson impersonation. He also cameo'd a lot as Orson on The Critic.

10. He was a regular on Futurama as well
Where he played Morbo the Newscaster and the horrible geletanous blob.

3. I'm thinking of the instrumental that played over the credits in the
original version as shown on YouTube. It was exquisitely melancholy. I don't remember hearing it last night, but I remember thinking that something was odd about the credits, as if they'd been abruptly shortened.

12. It sounds like an original piece rather than an excerpt.
I can't figure out if it is a variation on the Simpson's theme or not.

4. The genius of that show is that they rarely spell it out.
They don't offend dimwits, but most folks get what they're talking about. The squelched last line would have offended dimwits, and the rest of us knew quite well what the sarcasm was all about.

"I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" came out in 1941 and was a huge hit.

7. As it ended and the credits/song rolled, I though it would have
worked equally as well, and perhaps even driven the irony a little better, if they had gone with either "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" from Cabaret, or Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again" from Dr. Strangelove.

"Oh Fatherland, Fatherland,
Show us the sign
Your children have waited to see.
The morning will come
When the world is mine.
Tomorrow belongs to me!"

11. I suspect that they may have planned something like that at the
start of the project, but when they saw the finished project they realized that the subject was beyond laughter. Something about seeing an empty Springfield with occasional explosions and no people was just too sad to add any more irony.
