1. I wonder if others are taking tallies, too?
I called Levin's office a bit ago, and I thought the staffer's response was sort of strange. He heard me out, then it sounded like he was doing something, because it was quiet for just a second or two. Then he said thanks and I'll pass your request along. Hmmmm....
You are right NGU!

4. I just called BEN Nelson's office
I heard phones ringing in the background, but I got through on the first try. I asked the gal why Sen. Nelson was planning to vote yes on Alito, and she gave me the usual schlock. And so then I said that it really confused me why he would feel that way, given Alito's record on siding against individual civil rights and his view on executive power. I said I was very concerned, and that I understand that this is a vote of conscience. And that I knew, living in Nebraska, that the Republicans want him to vote their guy in. But that I hope and expect Nelson to take a good, hard look at this man's judging record and ask himself if he can, in good conscience, support a record like that. And I asked her if she could explain to me why he seemed to be ignoring this information. She said she couldn't answer my questions, but she would pass along my concerns.

Then I also told her I would like Sen. Nelson to support the filibuster. And that if he couldn't, then to at least abstain from voting at all for cloture and let those that do feel strongly about it do what they need to do.

She was very polite to me, which is an improvement over the person in that office that I spoke with last week.

5. Excellent report, thanks.. i have a question...
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 06:09 PM by radio4progressives
how will abstentions impact cloture/filibuster?

is it helpful to our cause, do you know? i'm asking, because i really don't know. will it help block alito's confirmation?

11. They (repubs) need 60 "yes" votes for cloture to stop a filibuster.
We are asking some of these RW "Dems" to AT LEAST not vote "yes" for cloture so that the filibuster can continue.

We are basically just asking them to step out of the way and not interfere if we start filibustering.

12. The Repubs need 60 votes for cloture to stop the debate.
Otherwise it's pretty much automatic filibuster as we can keep the debate open. As long as Dems don't vote YES on cloture, they won't get the 60 needed to end debate.

13. gives them one less vote
even though we don't gain a vote, it doesn't really hurt us because he was going to help them anyway.

15. Yes, abstaining will help...
In order to end the debate and move to a vote, the Senate needs 60 votes for cloture. (Think "closure" instead--it means about the same thing.) We don't necessarily need 41 NO votes. We need to stop them from getting 60 YES votes. So if someone like Nelson doesn't feel brave enough to actually vote no (which would support the filibuster) then he *could* just simply NOT vote, and it still would not count as a YES.

We want to stop YES votes. We don't need any certain number of "NO" votes. Just stop the YES's.

Does that make sense? :)
