A little glee is understandable
but how about some perspective, folks?

After at least twelve years of getting kicked around, we finally got a little of our own back. That's well and good. But can we possibly resist being the same kind of sore winners our adversaries were? Just possibly?

We won. Now we've got to figure out what we're going to do with it. We've got roughly two years to accomplish something that tells the American people that we are in it for all of us, not just ourselves. It's not about winning, it's about having the chance to make things right.

I'm very proud to be a member of DU. But the one thing we are not is a blue counterpart to Free Republic. We're better than that. We're smarter, more compassionate, and more rational than they are.

I consider DU a kind of progressive think tank--the first think tank of its kind in the world. I think we've had an effect on the whole shebang, and now's our chance to try to think of ways to continue making a difference.

We need to start putting our talents to work FOR the Dems, in congress and elsewhere. Maybe we can get together and start putting together possible legislation. We have at least as much of a right to do so as any corporate lobbyist, right?

It's time we started looking to the positive.

To put it another way:

We won. Now what are we going to do about it?

1. How's about just giving us a few hours to enjoy the victory?
Of course we know there's work ahead. But goddamnit, I'm enjoying the WIN, at least until daybreak. :eyes:

Don't think that's really too much to ask, now, do you?

3. I intend to enjoy...
... my well-earned shadenfreude.

As for "what will we do?", well that one's easy. We will STOP THE BUSH AGENDA IN ITS TRACKS.

6. Nobody in Congress has called..
... but if they do, here are my ideas.

Sunset the Patriot Act, both versions, while enacting a new bill containing the more sensible elements.

Repeal the absurd tax cuts for the rich.

Call closed hearings with the leader of our military, and get to the bottom of it - is there any point to being in Iraq any longer?

Undo the disastrous "we don't have to follow the Geneva Conventions" law passed recently. All of it.

You want more?

10. That's great!
I concur.

Oh, they don't have to call. :D We can do the same thing now we did before--every time we wanted to get their attention.

Some of them will even listen to us right out of the gate. I wouldn't be surprised if more than one of them lurks here, even if he or she doesn't post.

This place is a crucial resource.

8. Ah, there's a difference between pity and sympathy.
LOL

Maybe it's that I'm not weighed down by that whole "home team," testosterone-driven sports mentality. To me, winning means we can do something that'll actually benefit the people of this country, and, with any luck, the rest of the world.

Winning itself is meaningless. It's all what we do with the victory.

15. Oh you killjoy!
I agree we can't rest on our heels but jeez, give us at least a little time to be happy! We've had six years of misery under these fucks, let's taste this air of freedom for awhile.

17. I watched the news and whooped it up...
Grinning like several different kinds of fiend.

Now, as I'm slowing down and getting ready to go to bed, I'm more contemplative. That's all.

19. Ummm....perspective????
For the past six years I've been completely overwhelmed by the losses we've experienced (even worse because I knew most of the losses were because of cheating...). So, we watched the elections CLOSELY and any cheating was immediately pounced on...causing me quite a bit of happiness...we watched the elections and dems actually won over and over again last night (VERY few disappointments overall).

So, let us gloat and have some fun for awhile...I realize it's not a pretty thing to see, but it's been a LONG TIME since we've been able to, and we've had the right wingers throwing it in our face for six long years...I'm looking forward to a day when the right wingers DON'T GIVE ME GRIEF at work for being a Democrat...I will ENJOY their silence immensely!!!!

...Bush said he had been given a mandate after the 2004 election, but I truly feel the American electorate has given all Democrats a real mandate here, and will be watching closely and taking notice. If we don't do something with this, they will not forget, and we'll pay for it over the next 2 or 3 generations. Don't drop the game faces people! The easy part is over. What lays before us now is the hard work that will define the Democratic party for decades to come. Pack and lunch, and tell the missus you won't be home for dinner. We've got a lot to do.
