hat's why Orlando police say U.S. Senator Bill Nelson's namesake, Charles Wiliam Nelson, spent the wee hours of Election Night in the Orange County Jail.
The senator's 30-year-old son was charged early today with disorderly intoxication, pushing a police officer and resisting arrest in downtown Orlando. Police doused him with pepper spray before they could handcuff him, arrest reports show.
The fracas began about 2:45 a.m. outside the Embassy Suites Hotel on Pine Street where Senator Nelson held his victory party after defeating Republican challenger Katherine Harris by a 60 to 38 percent margin.
The younger Nelson's companion, Kimberly Baxter, appeared to be passed out and slumped over on the corner of Pine Street and Magnolia Avenue, according to Officer William C. Becton's report of the incident.
"It was apparent that the Defendant (Charles Willilam Nelson) was not capable of making an informed decision concerning Ms. Baxter's medical condition," the officer wrote, describing Nelson as reeking of alcohol, slurring his speech and unable to stand upright.
