Yesterday -- the day we took our country back -- was overcast and foggy, kind of dark and gloomy. But when I got up this morning, after less than four hours of sleep, the weather had cleared and a bright sun was rising. Before I left for work I got out my cordless drill and mounted a bracket on my front porch and put up the flag that I hadn't flown since November 3, 2004.
I entered my workplace softly humming "Na na na na, na na na na, hey, hey, hey, good-bye," but I don't think anyone noticed. But they did notice I was smiling. Interestingly, one of my more conservative co-workers came over to my cube and said, "Now I'm eating crow. You guys were doing that for 6 years, but now I am." I thanked him for being a gracious loser. Most of the rest of the known Republicans were totally silent. Not a word.
And another odd thing happened. This is November, and I live in Minneapolis. Yet not only was the sun shining, the temperature rose to 77 degrees this afternoon. That's absolutely unheard of in these parts for this time of year. And when I left to come home, there was the most magnificent sunset I've ever seen. It looked like a Maxfield Parrish painting.
Now, at the end of one of the best days ever, I'm at home, drinking champagne. We did it. Here's to the future.
