In every generation we are called to renew the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
In my lifetime so far I have seen four groups rise up and hold this nation to the promise of its foundational documents: the African Americans, the anti-Vietnam war students, the women (whose work was often unseen but so important to both the other groups), and now the Latinos (though that sleeping giant is barely awake yet).
By their passionate engagement with the American Dream, they dream it forward. Without them/us the dream dies. Before my lifetime it was the Jews. Before them, the Irish. The Abolitionists -- and on back.
And now there's us. The Progressives, of whatever gender, color, or ethnicity. We have been working for this day for years, believing in the promise, despairing of the outcome. We know that tomorrow, next week, January, the well-deserved celebration will taper off and the real work will begin again.
By our passionate engagement with the American Dream, we dream it forward. Without us, the dream dies.
