Here are my modest expectations from the new Democratic Congress:
In this order:

1) Increase minimum wage
2) Renegotiate drug costs for Medicare Part D
3) Initiate a new energy policy: a) fund alternative energy projects, b) tied to an environmental policy
4) Set a timetable for Iraq

If we can get there before 2008, we will have a great chance of repeating...

6. They will support it, but
you're still up against the insurance companies and the pharmaceuticals. They are the ones who control health care in this country, and I think the way Part D was constructed illustrates that very well.

By the way, has anyone else heard the pharmaceutical commercials on Air America radio? I was disgusted!

7. Opposite
Providing healthcare and pensions almost bankrupted GM and Ford. That fact will be a arrow in the quill of those AGAISNT universal healthcare; not for it.

3. All good plus. . .fix HAVA and require
voter verified paper ballots nationally. Switch election day from a Tuesday to the first weekend of November.
Trash the electoral college.

Abolish the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act.

8. universal support
Some on the right/pro-business economists will probably have a problem with #1, but 2, 3, and maybe even 4 are issues that everyone can support.

Using the governments bargaining power to lower drug costs would have to make incredible economic sense to republicans and the whole "anti-terrorist" angle as a major reason for moving to renewable energy should appeal to them as well, even avoiding the whole "environmental" thing.

10. Give my rights back!!!
Restoring Habeas Corpus and abolish the Patriot Act would be the Number One issue with me...no National ID cards..get our liberties back.

I don't ever want to be asked again why I was out of the country..or where I went and what I did..what a Crock of Shiat.

12. The "Bush Surveillance Plan" was highlighted this morning
as something Bush is demanding Congress pass within the next few weeks...in other words, in the CURRENT Congress.
