Spitting Mad - Betrayal from Schumer - Just Finished phone call
Yesterday I announced here that a coalition of groups would be picketing Schumer's office today at noon to protest Chuck NOT supporting the filibuster. Then I got several angry responses telling me "He's Announced He's With Us. He's YES on Filibuster. Don't do the Demo. It'll make our side look stupid, it'll bludgeon Schumer." I then checked the official site that was keeping track and surely, Chuck was on the "YES" list. I then made several calls to suggest to either call it off or shift all the message to Thanks, Chuck, for representing YOUR base, etc. Folks felt the horse was already out of the barn and we should go ahead, shift the message to one of support, and make the picket a Supportive one.
This morning I was woken up by a friend who heard it announced on our Pacifica station the Chuck has backed down. I immediately called Schumer's office and spoke with one of his staffers:
JOSH GOLDSTEIN -- and told him this whole story and asked him what happened. His response was: Senator Schumer has made NO STATEMENT AS TO WHAT HE IS DOING ON THE FILIBUSTER.
I said "THAT is your DEFENSE???" He asked me "Are you KIDDING that there REALLY is going to be a demonstration in front of our office at noon?" I said ABSOLUTELY. He asked me which groups. I said a coalition of feminists, anti-war folks and civil rights activists. He wanted to know the names of the groups. He was REALLY CONCERNED that there might be a demo, but thought I meant that it was going to be in DC. When he understood that it was the New York office he sounded less upset, but said he would warn the staff in New York. This JOSH FRIEDMAN staff guy did not give ONE SHIT about the importance of supporting the filibuster and supporting his base. I raised my voice once and when he said "don't yell at me or I'll hang up on you" I IMMEDIATELY lowered my voice and stated how horrified I was at Chuck's betrayal and JOSH kept repeating I'm gonna hang up if you keep yelling - And I *wasn't* yelling at all! He was just using that as an excuse to get off the phone. He assessed that I was part of that expendable constituency --you know -- Most of us Here on DU GD:Alito.
CALL JOSH and quietly, firmly let him know what you think of this betrayal.
Any folks in New York --Noon at 47th Street & 3rd Avenue -- In front of Chuck's office (757 3rd Ave.)-- let him know we want leadership not political double-speak - come with signs, if you can. Any DU'ers in DC maybe should consider visiting Chuck's office THERE as well.

17. People should call and say they are getting ready to head out to the demo
...and has Chuck backed down? And oh, (if the answer is that Chuck WILL support the filibuster) do you mind if I record your statement so I can send it the twenty or so folks I am planning on meeting up with???? They won't believe it unless we have some sort of record.....

3. Heh? Betrayal, How?
He didn't say he wasn't supporting it, he said he hasn't commented yet. He's keeping his cards close to his vest, that's cool. When all's done Schumer will be on the right side of this, I can almost guarantee it.

18. Schumer is on board with this. I spoke with his Albany office on Friday.
So is Hillary Clinton. Here's my post on this, on this thread, including a link to a site which lists who's currently on board. I'm not sure where the confusion is coming from, but I sure haven't heard that he's reversed himself. He'd be in real trouble, then, but he's spoken out vehemently against Alito, several times. I've spoken to Schumer's staffers both in Albany and in D.C., since he's my senator...

9. Yes they are. Stop mangling the Constitution.
The Constitution doesn't make an exception for a President who's been accused of a felony. Or anything else. If he's in office, he gets to nominate judges.

BTW: He hasn't been CHARGED with a felony. Just accused, by members of the public. Plenty of people here have been accused of treason. Bill Clinton was accused plenty of times over of felonies. Hell, he was actually impeached. And he got to choose judges. "Accused" means nothing.

(That doesn't mean the Senate has to CONSENT to the judge. But "accused felons" are allowed to select whoever they want.)

8. CALM DOWN -- Just got the confirm that he's 'NO' on cloture
Talked to a staffer in the DC office. Apparently Schumer just made a statment that he's supporting the filibuster. She said "It's your lucky day." I felt like saying "It's the country's lucky day, you cow!" but I said "Tell him I thanked him" instead.

SO, no betrayal

15. He had better. I'm losing patience with Schumer.
He's too fucking cute sometimes. Same with Hillary.

They both need to understand the time for placating and manipulating is over.

They are either with US or with Bush. Period.

20. Schumer and Clinton are supporting the filibuster.
Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 12:27 PM by Rhiannon12866
I called their local (Albany) offices on Friday morning (read that calling locally was more effective), adding my name to "the tally," as Sen. Clinton's office called it, and received the news that they were both supporting the filibuster, later that afternoon. I called Schumer first, since, as the senior senator, and as a member of the Judiciary Committee, I felt that he should lead on this, and told this to his staffer. She was very pleasant, but I laid it on thick on how much we needed someone in his position to get on board with this.

Here's the link to the site which lists who's on board, who's not, and who's waffling. This also gives phone numbers...

edited to clarify I meant phone numbers...

14. Can Someone Please tell me Where this story is breaking?
Forgive me if I'm a little skeptical -- I think I've earned a right to be.....(I Mean Why would this Josh Goldstein say "Senator Schumer has made No statement on the filibuster" at 10:00 am, then by 10:20 another staff member says YES,
Could it have anything to do with the fact that
10 minutes earlier they had been informed that they are having many pickets in front of their office at noon? Who knows....

to shut us up, but then will vote for cloture?? Won't surprise me if some do this, sadly. :-( :-(

22. The rally in front of Schumer's office is going on now. (I was not able
to be there for personal reasons) but after speaking to someone Nice and Pleasant at Chuck's office (who gave his name) and stated that Yes, this morning, Chuck announced to his staff that he would join the filibuster and do everything possible to prevent Alito from being confirmed. I asked if that means 'NO' on cloture, and he said yes, that means 'NO' on cloture. So I AGAIN called some folks I knew were attending the demo and told them. They were very skeptical saying "You can't trust these guys--they'll say anthing just to get us off their back!" I tried arguing, but the cell phone got cut off.
Chuck's guy said at some point the official statement should be up on his website. It'll be interesting if it ever appears there.
