24. because they want to have it both ways?

If they have no principles and think this is the way to get the most votes possible in the next election?

So that would seem to be official. Can anybody reach them to confirm? I cannot get in.

12. Not good enough -- Horse's mouth only
Really, don't underestimate them.

They are not above promising a Chaffee staffer "greener pastures" if they mislead callers.

Must be on-record, public statement.

10. Hold the Finish -- Don't Act on Rumor
If it still appears that he's making the only unprincipled, immoral vote. To oppose BOTH Alito and filibuster.

He needs to be told this in no uncertain terms. This is exactly the kind of thing voters punish candidates for.

Let's stay on him until his position is public record.

and will likely follow that tradition.

18. I asked him to beg him to either abstain
or reconsider - this is a once in a lifetime vote - and if he were going to make one exception to that rule in his career - this is the one to do it on.

20. It's not the GOP base
It's not the GOP base he needs to worry about. He represents a state that is 70/30 Dem/Repuke.

He's over a barrel. Yes on cloture, he pays for it in the general election. No on cloture, he pays in the primaries.

I asked him not to vote either way on cloture.

It's the yes's that count, not the no's

21. Chafee's Providence Office
Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 11:08 AM by Rhody97
Just got off the phone with the Providence office for Chafee. I told the very polite staffer that it was meaningless for Chafee to vote no on Alito's and yes for cloture. She responded that there're not enough votes for the filibuster. I asserted he should not give then the 60 votes and he should abstain in the cloture vote. She claims few phone calls have come in this morning.
