NYT: Florida voter uses extremely rare stamp to mail absentee ballot
Absentee Ballot Carries Big Price
By REUTERS
Published: November 11, 2006

MIAMI, Nov. 10 (Reuters) — A Florida voter may have unwittingly lost hundreds of thousands of dollars by using an extremely rare stamp to mail an absentee ballot in Tuesday’s election, a government official said Friday.

The stamp, a 1918 Inverted Jenny, which takes its name from an image of a biplane accidentally printed upside-down, turned up Tuesday night in Fort Lauderdale, where election officials were inspecting ballots from parts of South Florida, John Rodstrom, a Broward County commissioner, told Reuters.

Only 100 of the stamps have been found, making them a top prize in philately.

Mr. Rodstrom, a member of the county’s canvassing board, said he spotted the red and blue Inverted Jenny on a large envelope with two stamps from the 1930s and another dating to World War II.

This is just sad.

Oh, and the other kicker...The ballot was disqualified because it gave no clue of the voter’s identity.

15. Not that those who now have the stamps will be so honest as to do the test
After all, the voter shouldn't have made that mistake, right?

7. What does that have to do with anything?
Just because someone makes a mistake, a mistake that cost them a lot of money and nearly cost all of us a tangible piece of history, means they're a cheat? :wtf:

8. They could be.
Like people who use old or foreign coins to buy newspapers.

9. Using old coins doesn't cheat anyone.
They're legal tender and probably worth more than new coins.

5. Surprised it was delivered
Although the stamp is worth 100's of thousands of dollars, the postal value of a "Jenny" stamps was only 24 cents.

10. Value depends on whether they were cancelled or not,
among other things.

19. They haven't even had time yet, the article says, to authenticate
the stamp. No word yet on what will be done with it once it has been authenticated.
