Robert Gates is skilled in making things look more threatening than they really are
In addition to his role in the Iran-Contra affair and his role in the Iran-Iraq war, Gates has been criticized on several other matters:

According to Robert Parry, a reporter who closely tracked CIA history in the 1980s, "In 1985, Gates closeted a special team to push through another pre-cooked paper arguing that the KGB was behind the 1981 wounding of Pope John Paul II" despite the fact that CIA analysts knew that the charge was bogus.

Critics have charged that Gates concocted evidence to show that the Soviet Union was stronger than it actually was, and that he repeatedly skewed intelligence to promote a particular world view.

Hmmmmm, I wonder what he is going to say about Iran.

1. "Better nominees for a New Direction"
How's that for a slogan explaining why Gates shouldn't be SecDef.
