Out of all this, I want my childhood heroes back.

The one thing I want out of all the coming change is a reduction in police powers.

I want Miranda back. I want an end to covert entries and hidden searches. I want the cops to take off their black masks and jackboots and remember THEY'RE OFFICERS OF THE LAW, NOT STORMTROOPERS.

I want the police to remember who they are and what they are supposed to do, and I want them to remember they are supposed to OBEY the law. The cops are not supposed to BREAK the law in the performance of their duties.

I want the arrests to be clean and well-documented. I want the cops to throw away their tasers and go back to trying to stop wrongdoing with words and gentle restraint instead of just zapping citizens to death because of bad training or mere incompetence.

I want the rule of law back. I want the cops to be the good guys again.

I want my childhood heroes back.

The past cannot be retrieved.

Think of the future and that Fleetwood Mac song...

because Nixon was paranoid about KIDS who hated his damned war and Posse Comitatus prevented him from using the military to mow us all down.

The police loved all their new toys. Macho swagger was more appealing to Officer Friendly than the boring job of keeping the peace had been.

I'd love to have the police back, too. Overturning the forfeiture laws would go a long way to getting them back. No forfeiture, no money for newer and badder toys.

Time to reverse the militarisation and increase the professionalisation. And this is a golden opportunity.
