Filibuster Surprise (What the DNC/Dems should Do)
Beat the republicans at their own game...

Find the 5 most moderate republican senators (from Blue states) and promise not to run a candidate against them in their next Senate race...

I'd gladly trade 5 senators' next terms for a Supreme Court nomination.

I'm just saying... if I were head of the DNC...

1. that's quite a large promise for just filibuster support
but point well taken. we need to dole out carrots and sticks as appropriate, and definitely need to pry off a few republican votes.

we can certainly promise them a role in the democratic senate starting january 2007 :)

2. Same here, there are at least 5 somewhat reasonable GOPs
in there, Goldwater GOPs who aren't religiously insane and who can be reasoned with once they're not being blackmailed by Rove and bullied by Delay. Use them and honor the bargain made with them.

The only other surprise they could possibly pull is a walkout if the cloture vote is successful. That would shut the whole thing down and is our own "nuclear option."

4. How would a walk-out shut it down?

3. with the projected gains in the senate in 06'
giving up those 5 races could mean the majority!
no- I think it's cut-throat now- just like the monkey says - you're either with us or against us - as Kennedy said "This IS the Time!"

6. It's harder to threaten Red-State dems than deal with Blue State repubs
It's easier to get what you want from enemies by making fair trades than it is by putting friends under duress. Yes peer-pressure works, but not if the peers feel they don't have any other choice (which I believe is the case for Byrd and a couple others).
