Chinese attack sub stalks U.S. carrier group, enters to within firing range and surfaces

<snip>

A Chinese submarine stalked a U.S. aircraft carrier battle group in the Pacific last month and surfaced within firing range of its torpedoes and missiles before being detected, The Washington Times has learned.
The surprise encounter highlights China's continuing efforts to prepare for a future conflict with the U.S., despite Pentagon efforts to try to boost relations with Beijing's communist-ruled military.
The submarine encounter with the USS Kitty Hawk and its accompanying warships also is an embarrassment to the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, Adm. William J. Fallon, who is engaged in an ambitious military exchange program with China aimed at improving relations between the two nations' militaries.
Disclosure of the incident comes as Adm. Gary Roughead, commander of the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet, is making his first visit to China. The four-star admiral was scheduled to meet senior Chinese military leaders during the weeklong visit, which began over the weekend.
According to the defense officials, the Chinese Song-class diesel-powered attack submarine shadowed the Kitty Hawk undetected and surfaced within five miles of the carrier Oct. 26.
The surfaced submarine was spotted by a routine surveillance flight by one of the carrier group's planes. The Kitty Hawk battle group includes an attack submarine and anti-submarine helicopters that are charged with protecting the warships from submarine attack.
According to the officials, the submarine is equipped with Russian-made wake-homing torpedoes and anti-ship cruise missiles.
The Kitty Hawk and several other warships were deployed in ocean waters near Okinawa at the time, as part of a routine fall deployment program. The officials said Chinese submarines rarely have operated in deep water far from Chinese shores or shadowed U.S. vessels.
A Pacific Command spokesman declined to comment on the incident, saying details were classified.
Pentagon spokesmen also declined to comment.
The incident is a setback for the aggressive U.S.-China military exchange program being promoted by Adm. Fallon, who has made several visits to China in recent months in an attempt to develop closer ties.

3. So the Chinese Navy does something right.
First time, ever.

(At least that I've heard of)

So who hates America enough to publicize this?

5. China and russia know whats going on more than Americans
and certainly US papers are last to know

China and russia are totally aware of Office of Special Plans tactics

The Boxer group are lambs sitting there for slaughter... Bakers group is tight lipped and America's allies are pretty nervous right now...

6. Diesel-Electric eh ? must be extremely quiet...meaning we should
be focusing on our anti-submarine detection capabilities if we are to pursue our new rail gun experiment. I read in Pop Sci a half year or so back that the US was considering installing rain guns on it's ships to save costs on firing projectiles. The projectiles would be fired into space, re-enter the atmosphere, and with satellite guidance, hit the target and destroy it with kinetic energy alone. The only problem is that the power required would force the ship, to come to a halt and shift power to the guns. Now why pray tell would we want to make ships, sitting ducks??

This rail gun system is a great idea, just make it land-based and leave the navy be.

7. I've read about the system your talking about
but it works best as land defense even though it has a weakness they found in lebanon of low trajectory missiles...I'm I thinking of the same system... israel has

8. Perhaps. Check this out.
http://www.popsci.com/popsci/technology/generaltechnology/64669aa138b84010vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html

icture this: A massive destroyer receives the location coordinates of an enemy headquarters more than 200 miles away. Instead of launching a million-dollar Tomahawk cruise missile, it points a gun barrel in the direction of the target, diverts electric power from the ship’s engine to the gun turret, and launches a 3-foot-long, 40-pound projectile up a set of superconducting rails. The projectile leaves the barrel at hypersonic velocity—Mach 7-plus—exits the Earth’s atmosphere, re-enters under satellite guidance, and lands on the building less than six minutes later; its incredible velocity vaporizes the target with kinetic energy alone.

Never knew Israel employed such a system. Must check that out.

12. Truisms about submarine detection
A. Diesel electric submarines running on battery are quiet think of listening for a flashlight.
B. Sonar is highly dependent on environmental conditions, at the best of times, ranges for diesel/electrics or even good (read US) Nukes are extremely short.
C. Dead astern is masked by own ships noise.
D. This is a very old tactic, it has be de rigueur for years to send a ship's CO a picture of a ship's name painted on the stern taken through the periscope cross-hairs. In wartime there would be an ASW protective force deployed to ensure this doesn't happen.

9. I expect China to strut more and more as economic interdependence increases.
They want to show they are an equal partner, and will not be taken for a ride. The have the tools to do this, and if they choose to pursue a culture of innovation, it is possible that they could suprise us on some of the military technology front. A good country to cultivate lasting peace with.

10. In order to project you must detect. Sorry, couldn't resist. Take this with

a grain of salt though. It wouldn't be the
first time the Pentagon faked vulnerabilities
to keep the war fever up.
