Toys for Tots Rejects Jesus Doll
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/J/JESUS_DOLL_REJECTED?SITE=PAPIT&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=home.htm

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A talking Jesus doll has been turned down by the Marine Reserves' Toys for Tots program.

A suburban Los Angeles company offered to donate 4,000 of the foot-tall dolls, which quote Bible verses, for distribution to needy children this holiday season. The battery-powered Jesus is one of several dolls manufactured by one2believe, a division of the Valencia-based Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co., based on Biblical figures. But the charity balked because of the dolls' religious nature.

Toys are donated to kids based on financial need and "we don't know anything about their background, their religious affiliations," said Bill Grein, vice president of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in Quantico, Va.

As a government entity, Marines "don't profess one religion over another," Grein said Tuesday. "We can't take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family."

And the war against Christians in America continues!

Christmas is a Christian holiday (not a marketed one) like so many seem to think. Now I agree that sending a talking jesus would not be good if the child was not Christian, however I dont think you should ban a donation that does not hurt the children.

If a Jesus doll mistakenly gets in the hands of a Jewish or Muslim family, tell the kid it's a talking "Hippy Ken" doll......they are really making too much of this..........

8. I don't know, could be kind of fun...
I could imagine playing with a foot tall talking jesus as a kid...He would invade zartan's swamp palace and be attacked by missiles from the cobra airship, before the whole thing is acted out with bottle rockets and firecrackers in my sandbox.

On second thought.... :(

10. Even with the Ten Commandments, "not suggestions," you get the
instruction not to "make unto me any graven images." I would imagine this covers dragging around a lil' ol' Jesus dollie.

Don't devaluate "the Lord" by making "the Lord" dollies. That should make sense to a Fundie.

11. The Marines do an outstanding job with this program
and the pragmatism behind not taking the doll is the right thing to do. gawd those poor christians are so persecuted. No one is allowing them to destroy the constitution and replace it with parts of the bible they find convenient. (The parts they pick and choose.) Poor, persecuted whiny ass motherfuckers.

15. If I was religious...
I think I'd regard such a toy as blasphemous. "Taking the name of the Lord in vain", and all that.

As I'm not religious, I simply regard it as idiotic to the n'th degree.

Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 03:19 PM by carlydenise
that is why they are giving them away now. When I was a kid, that poor doll would have ended up with dreadlocks, probably dressed in barbie clothes........my ken dolls never did have any clothes, they just were not as cool as barbie clothes...so they ended up in a dress or in a bathrobe, I am more spiritual than religious, if I were religious I would probably be slightly offended by making Jesus an action figure.

Here is a picture of the action figure in question:

19. sounds like one hell of a graven image to me - and a sickening concept
if you actually believe in Christ why would you so disgustingly trivialize Him by making a damnable talking doll out of our image of him. I hope the idiot company that made these dolls goes out of business soon.

what does it say? "May the Schwartz be with you?"

Kudos to the Marine Corps. for having the class and good taste to pass on this tripe. I don't think it's even necessary to get into Establishment Clause/Church/State issues here. It's just an absurd, classless toy that would be a ridiculous gift to a kid from a financially troubled family.

This is actually kind of funny. The one time they actually try and separate Church and State - it's over a religious holiday.
