Four Feathers
Plot Summary for
The Four Feathers (2002)

Set in 1898 Sudan, this fifth film to be adapted from the A.E.W. Mason novel follows a British officer who resigns his post right before his regiment ships out to battle the rebels. Perceiving his resignation as cowardice, his friends and fiancee give him four white feathers, the symbol of cowardice...

www.imdb.com

DUer Bob3 had an idea a week ago that we should sent white feathers to every DINO who acts against the interests of our party and the Nation. It would be a simple but extremely clear statement that we expect far greater courage from the "loyal opposition".

5. The film has been remade five times. If they are over 40

they'll likely know what it means. Besides, only a few feathers would require notes-one explanation to the uncultured would be enough.

On edit; a SINGLE white feather is the symbol of cowardice. The main character in the film received four; three from fellow soldiers, and one from his fiance. The meaning was devastating "you have abandoned your country. You are dead to me".

4. Excellent idea.
They'll be getting those, plus photocopies of the checks I wrote them in 2004 and the note that these not insignificant sums will be going elsewhere now.

I am also resigning as a precinct chair and re-registering as either a Socialist or an Independent.

8. Craft stores. I should clarify by saying a SINGLE white feather
is the symbol of cowardice. The main character in the film received four; three from fellow soldiers, and one from his fiance. The meaning was devastating "you have abandoned your country. You are dead to me".

9. The symbolism of a single white feather is a bit more profound. It
represents more than surrender; lack of respect, betrayal of one's nation, and social shunning.

I just e-mailed this one to Inouye (I thought maybe an actual feather would get the envelope opened for investigation).

Just the feather. There is, after all, nothing left to say to these people.

20. It wasn't just used by the British, either:
"White feather was a Civil War slang expression for bugging out or running away."

http://www.cr.nps.gov/history/online_books/rthg/chap4.htm

And from wikipedia, the earliest citation of the word "chikenhawk' included a "white Feather" reference:

Earliest Citation:
In England during World War I, as thousands were dying pointlessly in the trenches, pretty girls went around handing white feathers — a symbol of cowardice — to men who weren't in uniform. The one group currently being handed white feathers who may deserve them are the so-called "war wimps" or "chicken hawks" — prominent Americans helping to spread war fever today who avoided service during Vietnam. —"No white feather, please," The New Republic, June 16, 1986

26. Between 0.99 and 2.99, depending on how big a bag you buy
The trick is finding white ones without black tips, but the ends can easily be trimmed off if need be (only pure white works symbolically).

27. GREAT IDEA! We will likely have to include your explanation though.
Apparently they are too STOOPID to figure out why they should vote with their own freaking party right now.

Have to admit some Dem's still dance to the beat of a different (albeit completely offbeat) drummer. Even after all the evidence that a (party) line dance looks better and accomplishes more!

When are they ever gonna learn?

28. See post # 20 for additional historical context. Each senator would only
need to get one feather with an attached note. After that, the meaning of each additional feather received would be fairly clear.

36. No - if a staffer opens an envelope with a single white feather
he/she will probably ask "what the heck is this" - then some bright young Democrat will google it.

A single feather - no explanation seems most poetic. Let them do the work.

the checks to their primary opponents or to a Senator NOT your own that you are supporting financially (however small) because they stood up for you.

Show 'em the (lack of) money.

because regardless of party, the Alito enablers have disgraced themselves, their constituents, and their country.

This is NOT a victory for the conservatives. Those poor fools are fucked too, they just don't know it yet.

32. True. Let's tell them that by kowtowing to special interests and their
corporate masters, they have betrayed America.

Also; EVERY chickenhawk on the Hill deserves one! (in fact, the first use of the term "chickenhawk"used in a political context included a mention of the chickenhawk's fear of "white feathers"-see post #20)

38. The tradition is shared in other countries as well. From Australia:

"Regardless of the reason, to be given the white feather meant you were a coward - a stigma that you bore for the rest of your life"
