The Democrats could have produced 40 no votes
because there are only four Democrats voting to confirm Alito. There is an Independent and a Republican voting no on Alito's confirmation. Why no arm twisting to bring them along? Isn't the goal of voting no to stop an action for going forward?

There were 42 no votes possible and the excuses not to fight for those votes made no sense.

4. Where are the real Republicans? There are enough votes on both sides
to stop the aLIEto confirmation and the george Confirmation.

5. Yeah, I'm all for threatening and cajoling
and I'm not being sarcastic. This was totally pathetic. If I was minority leader, I'd find a way to punish those bastards. They want something next time? They can get that shit on their own. That being said, I'm not minority leader so my opinion doesn't really count

7. Because some Dems aren't comfortable with having power.
They'd rather sit back and let the Republicans destroy this country and the rights of its citizens.

Lieberman is a jinx. He has influence, he could have used it, but he would rather fracture the Democratic party than give it some honest-to-God sense of power.

McCain-Lieberman 2008. There's the ticket.

9. Don't we have a whip?
Aren't they suppose to bring this bunch together? Kennedy should be our leader imho.

15. We had a whip and, as he was one of the few people who
pushed for this vote, he probably did what he could. However, we also have a leader who did not.

11. I guess we could have locked them in the cloakroom
To me this spotlights where our problem lies. Rural America. Either we get in there and fight, or expect more of these kinds of losses. Anything else seems to me to be denying the basic problem. We need to support those who are fighting, and feeling alone in their fight, in those red states.
