1. Whose bandwidth are we stealing?
It's got to come from somewhere.

14. If you own a website...
Typically, your ISP will charge you a flat rate per billing period for a certain amount of traffic that your site can handle. Your site has to occupy a certain amount of hard disk space on the ISP's server, which is always running and is never supposed to shut down. It is possible, however, to shut down a server by overloading it with excessive traffic, which is one reason why DU disables many of its features when traffic becomes extremely high.

If you run a small website, you can make do with a basic package from the ISP and pay less to keep the site up and running. But if your site starts pulling in major traffic, your ISP may require you to buy more and more space and bandwidth so that smooth traffic can be guaranteed.

Does this help?

19. My question was about the NYUD?
how does that work? It sounds like it takes the hosting away from the webmaster's ISP but where does the new hosting come from? I hope I'm being clear enough. Thanks for your efforts so far.

8. okay, Let me try this too
This is totally not working for me. How do you do subdirectories (the url addy behind the slashes)? Where does the ":8090" go?

...by the way, I blame you for putting Julie Newmar on my brain

11. Another Simple Way (using same service)...
Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 11:16 AM by neoblues
I would say "easier", but it does take several steps...
The advantage is that you don't have to think, just cut/paste.

  1. Go to the page: http://www.coralcdn.org/ (consider setting a bookmark)

  2. Then cut/paste your image URL into the input field (and press <Enter> )...

A new window or tab opens, displaying your image...

  3. Simply grab that URL (to which the "nyud.net:8090" has automatically been added) and use it.

Simple. ;)

Other advantages:
--it "preloads" the image to the public server
--it ensures that you "get it right" the first time
--you find out ahead of time if this approach is going to work; on rare occasions, it doesn't.

Edit: added suggestion of adding bookmark, oh, and to press <enter>...
