Are you wearing Fido or Tabby? EU proposes dog and cat fur ban
Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 05:04 PM by Opusnone
Unfortunately in the US products in the price range at $150 or under do not require labeling, so you really can't be sure if you're wearing dogs, cats or rabbits.

Steps to ban trade in cat and dog fur across the EU have been announced by the European Commission.
The move follows a request for action from EU member states, and a campaign by Paul McCartney and his estranged wife, Heather Mills McCartney.

It is estimated that two million cats and dogs are being killed in China by fur traders each year.

Fifteen EU states have already taken some action on cat and dog fur, but it is still legal in the other 10.

From AP Story:

Because of the fur trade's secretive nature, he said, it was hard to estimate how much dog and cat fur finds its way onto the market or pinpoint its source.

However, a December 2005 investigation by the Australian animal-rights group Humane Society International showed dog and cat fur production had taken place in the Czech Republic and other Eastern European states.

"People are disgusted when they find out that cats and dogs are killed every year for their fur," said HSI Director Mark Glover.

HSI estimates around 2 million cats and dogs are killed for fur each year, with an estimated 5,400 cats and dogs killed in China each day.

Do the new terrorism laws apply if we boycott or call out the retailers who are selling these items?

Think about it.

1. Mostly, I'm wearing Fido...
My dog sheds a lot this time of year, and his hair gets EVERYWHERE.

3. I'm wearing a lot of tabby.
I got 2 cats and I'm always covered and I mostly wear black so I go thru a lot of lint removers.

2. Maybe we can get the Democratic lead congress to do something.

We could at least try.

5. That would be GREAT!
I only wear "synthetic" or "man-made" labeled clothing - and if it doesn't say what it is, I won't buy it.

6. Grass roots pressure must be put on business and legislators

Close the import loopholes, boycott the retailers, put the manufacturers on notice that we are aware of and opposed to their products, help the Humane Society, ASPCA, PETA and other animal rights groups and call or write your congress critters.

Squeaky wheel, meet grease...

4. I have an unshakeable opinion that fur looks best on the original
animal. I just inherited two 40+ year old mink coats at the first of the year, have them mothballed until I can't afford to heat this house.

I do wear a fake fur coat that I made back in the 80s when all the yuppies were experiencing fur lust and people who looked like the Michelin Man in down coats were sneered at. I made it as much as a joke as anything else.

Now everybody sneers at the fake fur until I tell them what kind of animal it came from: petrochemical. Or Jurassic. Whatever.

The main things they've found in the US made of cat and dog fur are cat and dog ornaments with the fur of inhumanely put down domestic animals used for the fur that was glued onto them. Those companies now swear they're using fur from inhumanely put down rabbits, like that makes a difference.

Face it, the fur trade is vile, no matter what the fur is used for and no matter its origin.

No, I don't throw paint on anyone. I just want folks to know where those coats come from.

8. I don't throw paint either. Not yet at least.
But I am less and less tolerant of fur with every passing day. I have made snide comments here and there and have gotten into several heated arguments with two acquaintances who lust after fur.

10. Let them wear roadkill
or tell them to go hunt, kill and skin their own.

I'm a firm believer that if people had to find and kill their own food, there would be many more vegetarians.

Don't forget to go see Fast Food Nation!

11. I know that film will be the final step in my becoming a vegetarian.
I've already kind of started becoming one - I just have a hard time finding enough protein sources without meat, so I do eat some now but only if it's organic and free range.

Nonetheless, just the trailer for FFN made me what to never eat meat again.

7. This is really kind of absurd...
Edited on Tue Nov-21-06 05:25 PM by Spider Jerusalem
I mean, it's already obvious that these same people generally DON'T have a problem with fur, UNTIL they find out it comes from dogs or cats. Which is just stupid, really; it's as ridiculous as Americans who eat beef and pork wanting to stop the slaughter of horses for meat, as if that's somehow different.

9. You have to start somewhere
I ate KFC until I saw the report on how inhumane their feed houses were, now I have boycotted them and will never grace their business again with my money.

Paris Hilton, for instance, who is a dog lover might stop wearing and buying fur because of reports like this. Like her or not she is a trend setter.
You have to start somewhere.
