Is there a virus on DU?
This is a serious question. Three times now I have clicked on a thread and all of a sudden about a hundred windows start popping up like I was at a porn site. Is there anyone else who is having this problem?

1. I just had this problem with a totally unrelated site
Might be spyware, or a problem with the browser. I'm using firefox 2, you?

4. More likely it's on your computer. DU is running fine for me.
Tried disinfecting your computer lately? AVG is good for windows, or so I hear.

p.s. Macs rule :-)

5. That's been happening to me recently, too,
but only when I'm on my old Mac using OS9, which is running an older Netscape browser. It doesn't happen on my OSX machine with a newer browser. I wish I could stop the windows from popping up, though.

7. You have adware.
Run a adware/spyware remover or three (more than one is a good idea- try adaware and spybot) and then switch to a more secure browser if you're using Internet Exploder.

8. YES. IT'S THE CAPS LOCK VIRUS.
IT'S A FAIRLY HARMLESS VIRUS, BUT IT LETS PEOPLE KNOW THAT YOU ARE REALLY SERIOUS.

9. That happened to me yesterday. Only time it has, but it was weird.
I probably had to close 50 windows that popped up when I clicked on "Reply" to a thread.

10. That's spyware, almost certainly. IT guy advice inside
I suggest the following options, all free and all highly rated:

Ad-Aware, a spyware scanner and remover;
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot, a spyware scanner, remover, and blocker (uses different rules from Adaware, so run both)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

and SpywareBlaster, a spyware blocker (which uses different rules from Spybot's blocker, so run both)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

None of these are very big, and are minimal in setup and installation; none use much in the way of processing power or memory when they aren't actively updating, and none take an excessive amount of time to scan, either. Along with AVG, which is a great free anti-virus tool ( http://free.grisoft.com ), these three are about the minimum level I keep on any internet capable computer.

I suggest installing these and running them one at a time, rebooting, and running them again. Take the extra time to clean your house, cook dinner or whatever while your computer cleans itself up. Usually, about once a month you'll want to update all of them and then run a scan ( I suggest right before showering or something that takes about as long).

I also suggest CCleaner ( http://www.ccleaner.com/ ), and using it's "cleaner" and "issue scanner" options once in a while, you'll almost certainly get quite a bit of faster boot-up time.

Good luck!

11. I can't get my Yahoo Messanger to work
in both IE 5 or Mozzilla 1. I have Windows 98. I can't seem to send the messages that I want and I can't see them in the message box. Every time I load it up I get a stupid script error so I tried what Yahoos troubleshooting page said to do, enable Java Scripting in IE but it still keeps popping up with the java script error.

I'm not having any problems on DU though.
