Bombs kill 150 in Baghdad

:(

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061123/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_061123155736

BAGHDAD, Iraq - In the deadliest attack since the beginning of the Iraq war, suspected Sunni-Arab militants used three suicide car bombs and two mortar rounds on the capital's Shiite Sadr City slum to kill at least 150 people and wound 238 on Thursday, police said.

The Shiites responded almost immediately, firing 10 mortar rounds at the Abu Hanifa Sunni mosque as Azamiya, killing one person and wounding seven people in their attack on the holiest Sunni shrine in Baghdad.

The Interior Ministry imposed a curfew on Baghdad until further notice.

Beginning at 3:10 p.m., the three car bomb attackers blew up their vehicles one after another, at 15 minute intervals, hitting Jamila market, al-Hay market and al-Shahidein Square in Sadr City. At about the same time, mortar rounds struck al-Shahidein Square and Mudhaffar Square, police said.

As the fiery explosions sent up huge plumes of black smoke up over northeastern Baghdad, and left streets covered with burning bodies and blood, angry residents and armed Shiite militiamen flooded the streets, hurling curses at Sunni Muslims and firing weapons into the air.

5. Republicans say : It's just like Detroit or Washington, DC.
Don't the people who vote republican ever get tired of being LIED to??

Iraq is a bloody, hopeless, awful quagmire and republicans will lie to keep us there.

Iraq is the goose that lays golden eggs for the war profiteers.

They won't give it up easily.

18. You missed my point. It is the labeling of people:
Black/White; X-tian/Jew/Muslim; Iraqi/American; gay/straight; Puke/Rat; and so on, that lets us develop the mindset that makes it alright to take from/subjugate/kill those that we designate as OTHER

20. calling somebody Iraqi is not labelling them the "other"
its an apt description.

and thinking "those poor Iraqis" is by no means what got us into this mess. which was my point that you seemed to have missed.

21. So remove the bloody adjective. (Or change it.)
Those Iraqi's who have America's oil.

Nationalistic identity may more commonly be used to designate how "special" WE are. However, it is by no means exclusively so. Put a significant block of any nationality inside another nation's borders or on top of a desired resource and you can easily find any number of pejorative adjectives/descriptors. (dumb Irishman, tight Scotsman, dirty/filthy Greek(Wog)/Italian(Wop)/Mexican(Wetback), rag/towel head)

If they are not us then they must be other and that my friend is what fosters the mindset which makes it perfectly O.K. to take that which they have and we want. Be it a nerd's money in the playground or the only significant source of tantalum on the globe in the Congo.

And just why is an artificial designation, arbitrarily created by the British Empire as her colonial power waned an apt description? It's not. It's a convenient label which lets us keep to our comfort zone(s) and distance ourselves from the horror we have created or allowed to be done in our (nationalistic) names.

If you(we) must apply labels to the people killed in these bombings, how about picking some which are inclusive rather than exclusive. Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, children?

23. you don't need to lecture me on "the other"
i understand what it means and how its used. i see no exploitation of "the other" when somebody's saying those poor Iraqis. that's all.

that's like bitching at somebody who says "those poor Katrina victims!" by going "hey why are you singling them out, they're just PEOPLE, why do you have to label them?!"

Honestly, there are so many other things to pinpoint and correct, I'm curious why you chose somebody's sympathetic pleas to pinpoint. It seem awfully callous amd matter-of-fact, while completely missing the point.

Bring 'em home, yes.

But, there's no limit to "worse"

Whether the US is there or not, "worse" is always a distinct possibility.
