Iraq vet AWOL again, says Army ignores his case
http://www.suntimes.com/news/nation/149822,CST-NWS-awol26.article

NEW ORLEANS -- A soldier who is again absent without leave said his lawyer repeatedly has tried to speak with the Army about his status but that the military is ignoring the subject.

Pvt. Kyle Snyder, 23, a former combat engineer, went AWOL from his Army unit after failing to report to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., on Nov. 1 -- a day after turning himself in after an 18-month AWOL stint. He had fled to Canada in April 2005 while on leave to avoid a second tour in Iraq.

''Legally, I'm AWOL again,'' Snyder said Friday. ''My lawyer has tried to contact Fort Leonard Wood like 75 times -- it's documented, 75 times -- and tried to get in touch with the military. They've avoided this entire subject.''

1. The Army doesn't want to make a martyr of him.
"Either go away, or show-up and go to Iraq," seems to be the message.

What he needs to do is show-up at a military prison and demand they put him on trial.

He may have to camp outside the front gate for a few days, ala Cindy Sheehan.

2. Let's hope they just leave him alone
could that be why they are not answering calls?

3. I met a soldier this past summer
who has been AWOL for almost a year. He told me the military is not going after the majority of the AWOL soldiers. He said he heard there are at least 8000 just like him.

4. Fort Leonard Wood? I can sure understand not wanting to be there.

It's the crotch of the Army... miserable site of my "basic training" in 1968 and a black hole if there ever was one. (Sorry if any Missourians take offense.) I hear that only Fort Polk was worse.
