9. Yup. I am surrounded by the little freepers...
It's great for OTHER PEOPLE to sacrifice, but they shouldn't have to.

I really would like to see 1 year of national service for ALL youth - between high school and college - it would make life teaching at college soooooo much more pleasant to get them with just a year of additional maturity.

I am antiwar and would like to see the military bases around the world abandoned -- bring the military back inside US borders for defense only.

National service could include a wide range of social service/community service activities...

11. Military for defense only
If we did that, we could run our military on $40 billion a year, relying
on volunteers to take up arms if our nation was attacked.

Our present program is to defend not just our homeland, but American
interests around the world, meaning corporate interests, and to use the
threat of military action to further our geopolitical agenda.

12. Agreed. I quote General Smedley Butler to people ALL the time -
He wanted the troops pulled back inside our borders for DEFENSE.

WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

In the World War a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows.

How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle? How many of them dug a trench? How many of them knew what it meant to go hungry in a rat-infested dug-out? How many of them spent sleepless, frightened nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them parried a bayonet thrust of an enemy? How many of them were wounded or killed in battle?

Out of war nations acquire additional territory, if they are victorious. They just take it. This newly acquired territory promptly is exploited by the few – the selfsame few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the bill.

13. I was one of the first to serve in the ....
volunteer army. It was post VN and you couldn't give the job away. So why did I, a relatively smart college kid volunteer. Because I felt that one needs to give back. I felt that as a society and even as human beings we are selfish and need to learn to give back. My stint taught me much and is part of what made me the person I am today, and I am a better person for it. At that time, I came away with the thought that EVERYONE should commit to 2 years of some sort of national service, to be a part of something bigger than oneself. I am not hard nosed and say it should be military, but folks should give back. I think it needs to be 2 years in order to get these kids attention. Flame me if you want, you can't be tougher than that 6'2" Louisiana drill sargent I dealt with but I wouldn't trade that experience for the world.
