SEN REID: Doing Away With The "DO-NOTHING CONGRESS" - Start Year With NO BREAK For 7 Weeks!
Doing Away With The "DO-NOTHING CONGRESS"

Reid also said he's doing away with the "do-nothing Congress" that Democrats campaigned against this year as they ousted the Republican majority in both chambers of Congress. The Nevada Democrat, who is wrapping up his final days as Senate minority leader, will take control of the Senate agenda when the new Congress takes the oath of office in January.

"We're going to put in some hours here that haven't been put in in a long time," Reid said. That means "being here more days in the week and we start off this year with seven weeks without a break. That hasn't been done in many, many years here."

2. 7 whole weeks without a break?
What sacrifice :eyes:

I am sorry, but there are things they are doing/planning on doing that could actually resonate with people. IMO emphasizing this tidbit is not a good thing.

All this does is remind us that politicians live in a whole different freaking world than working-class America, regardless of party.

5. All your comment does is remind me...
...how little people know of what Congressmen do.

They are not on vacation when they're not in Washington. They do a LOT in their districts. They work far more than you do, I guarantee that.

Edited on Tue Nov-28-06 03:52 PM by meganmonkey
then why must they try to prove how hard they are working by focusing on this 7-week-stretch? That doesn't make sense to me.

And take your personal assumptions elsewhere, I don't play that game.

10. Propaganda.
Nothing more. What, you think we're above that?

And it's nothing personal - they put in more hours of work than nearly anyone. I don't care what it is you do.

do nothing bunch that controlled the agenda for too long. This is a good thing. Letting people know it is a good thing.

36. Because in order to get anything done
you have to have a start and stop point.

Most legislation doesn't get completed and presented for a vote until the last few days of a session no matter how long it is. It is up to the leadership to find the balance. Of course, the GOP preferred to do as little as possible so they just stayed on vacation as much as possible.

4. How about 48 weeks of work throughout the year with
1 month vacation? What a novel idea. Let's get the work schedule to resemble more closely the work schedule of the working man. Better yet, how about more like the work schedule of those working minimum wages--maybe double shifts, 6-7 days a week, with no holidays.

13. Bullshit. And then some.
I work harder daily than any of these people, and I have the doctors' bills from injuries I suffered on the job, as well as the doctors' bills and records from OWCP to prove it. You'd be hard-pressed to find anything similar among any of the people we elect.

Let me know when you find a politician who has to lift several tons by hand every day and I'll agree they work as hard. But harder? Please. You're insulting everyone here who does real work- and sitting behind a desk, or getting on the phone, or casting a vote, or making a speech, or having a 'working' lunch that's considerably longer than any I ever get... Come on. That's not hard work, and I think you know that.

Can I ask why you are so sure of this fact? I am assuming that you personally know one of these folks?

My experience with said folks is that ltitle of what you say rings true, but perhaps I'm hanging around with the wrong crowd.

33. To be sure, some of that does happen.
But it's not nearly as wide spread as you'd think. Probably only about 5% actually do that, and you can expect that to be cracked down upon in the new Congress.

11. I am with you on this one.
I work a govt. job. I get (due to time on the job) 18 days of vacation a year, and can only carry 5 days of that from one year to the next (use or lose)

I get all recognized holidays off (paid), plus the day after Thanksgiving (paid), and one personal day (paid) annually.

After 20 more months, I go to 21 days of vacation annually (still can only carry 5 from year to year). That is with 15 years on the job. I put in at least 2.5-4 hours a week in above my 40 hours, which I never take as OT even though I could.

Congress and the Senate should work not a DAY less than I do....wait...

I am also the overworked, unpaid bookkeeper for my hubby's small business....so, add up my 45 hours a week at my first paid job, then add up my 20 - 25 hours a week at my unpaid job for our small business...then add in all the laundry, dishes, cleaning, yard mowing, grocery shopping, general around the house chores that I do every week because as a small business owner, my hubby is scrapping out days from 8-8 many times...so, I would say I work, counting all my jobs and chores, about 95 - 100 hours a week in the cold months, 110 - 130 hours a week during prime yard work season (I also mow my Grandpa's yard and do all his yard work, because he cannot do it anymore...add another 5 - 6 hours a week during warm months because he has 3 acres and a bunch of damn yews on steep grade that need trimming about every 6 weeks))

Take out commuting to and from work, and time for sleeping, and I am barely alive. SO, I will only ask Congress and the Senate to work ONE THIRD as hard as I do as long as they are trying to make things better for everyone, and fix the fiasco of our blunderer in chief.

Now, back to work.

To be fair here. You can't demand that they do Townhalls all over your district and state, and demand they work in DC 24/7 at the same time.

Many a fence sitter has been pushed to one side or the other. Patience will be needed while the push goes on pushing, don't fault the person when it was a system that put them there.

Work all the way through past the State of Union Address. Usually the GOPers were out of session and used that time to build up POTUS in the MSM.

27. kpete, this is not to you, but, rather, to some who replied to your post ......
For those of you who so gratuitously bashed Harry Reid, can I ask 'why'?

Is there something, specifically, wrong with his having said this? If so, I'd like to hear why saying this is a bad thing.

Keep in mind, the statement is to be taken for what it is ... one small point. It is not the entirety of his policy or his management agenda or the agenda for the senate. It is simply about housekeeping. And its a damned sight better than what the last bunch did.

You may have issues with Reid. I know I do. but this ain't one of 'em.

Again, for those who chose to bash him in what seems to many to be a gratuitous manner, why did you do that?
