So, anyone else heard of this "Amero" nonsense?
It seems that the black-helicopter crowd is worried that we're going to be forced to trade our dollars for something called an "Amero" (like a Euro, but with the US, Canada, and Mexico sharing the new currency).

Funny, I read three newspapers every day, and I'd never heard of this chimerical "Amero" until tonight on DU.

Spare me. Here in the US, the government can't even make us give up $1.00 bills for coins (they're now trying for the THIRD time), and the tinfoil-hatters think we'll put up with trading ALL of our dollars for "Ameros?"

Not likely.

Jeez, people, how about worrying about something that's REAL. Like the war, maybe?

1. there are some, including some in the administration,
that want to form a North American Union, similar to the European Union.

However the circumstances in North America are vastly different Europe.

5. Yeah, I know about that. Like NAFTA on steroids. But a common currency?
Fat chance.

20. It's still the policy of the United States to implement it:
15 U.S.C.A. § 205b:

It is therefore the declared policy of the United States

(1) to designate the metric system of measurement as the preferred system of weights and measures for United States trade and commerce;

(2) to require that each Federal agency, by a date certain and to the extent economically feasible by the end of the fiscal year 1992, use the metric system of measurement in its procurements, grants, and other business-related activities, except to the extent that such use is impractical or is likely to cause significant inefficiencies or loss of markets to United States firms, such as when foreign competitors are producing competing products in non-metric units;

(3) to seek out ways to increase understanding of the metric system of measurement through educational information and guidance and in Government publications; and

(4) to permit the continued use of traditional systems of weights and measures in non-business activities.

Crazy...

I wish we'd adopt it:(

27. Strangely enough ... the US almost became one of the FIRST countries to go metric.
Read about it in "Measuring America". A few shipwrecks, a couple of deaths due to diseases easily cured today, and the plan foundered. IIRC ol' Thomas Jefferson himself was in favor (but he liked that frou-frou Frenchy stuff :) ).

26. What makes more sense is outright dollarization.
The Canadollar and the USDollar were once locked at par. A revaluation of the Canadollar to bring it back at par, then locking it there by a central bank with representatives of both countries governing it. Then standardize coin and bill sizes (best bet: we adopt the Canadian model, which is significantly superior IMHO) and each nation continues to produce its own money with its own designs, but both currencies are accepted as legal tender in both nations.

When economic conditions are met, the Mexican peso is then revalued to be at par with the Dollar, and the same process can take place.
