Abdel Aziz al-Hakim, the powerful Iraqi Shia leader, has left for the US for talks with George Bush, dismissing UN calls for an international conference on his war-wracked country.

Al-Hakim is the leader of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI).

The Shia leader said the Iraqi political process did not need any outside help and described an international conference as "unacceptable."

Kofi Annan, the UN secretary-general, suggested on Thursday that an international conference could help to bring the country's warring factions together.
