Bob Novak: GOP leaders say party can't go into '08 with troops in Iraq

Iraq report spells trouble for Bush

December 4, 2006
BY ROBERT NOVAK Sun-Times Columnist

<snip>

At the core of Bush's Iraq dilemma is the fact, still denied at the White House, that the president has lost his political base on the overriding issue of the war. In contact mainly with fawning campaign contributors, Bush may not appreciate the steady decline in support of his war policy that I have seen deepening among Republicans in the last year.

This undercurrent of GOP protest roared to the surface with the party's election debacle Nov. 7. At the Republican grass roots, there is no question that Iraq lost the election. State officials and party leaders who are no specialists on foreign policy tell me the Republican Party simply cannot go into the 2008 campaign with troops still fighting in Iraq.

1. Politics. It's all politics. Fuck the people dead & dying.
Fuck the people who today will lose their legs, their arms, their eyes. Their lives.

POLITICS is what matters!

Fuck that.

4. If politics gets us out of Iraq,
then on the day we leave I'll thank God for politics. This is how democracy is supposed to function--elected officials do the right thing because the people won't vote for them otherwise. After all, if we could rely on officials to do the right thing without politics, a dictatorship would be the best form of government.

2. Why does this guy still have a column? I don't care what he
says, he shouldn't have any access to the public whatsoever.

3. The Quest for a Legacy
You see for the party it would be best if President Bush walked away from Iraq now, but to do that Bush would have to make an admission he's not going to make.

5. Let them concentrate on Iraq.
I don't believe it's only Iraq.

It's the disasterous combination of every repubic policy and the corruption of the party.

They don't have a prayer in 08 because everything they touch turns to shit and voters know it.

6. I do believe political GOPs will be the ones ending the war and voting with withdrawal Dems

next time around.

The clue I got was yesterday on Late Edition. Kerry stated he will support Gates for SoD - well there is NO WAY that Kerry would support Gates unless he has received assurance that they will be drawing down troops. Kerry met with Iraq Group a week ago laying out the argument for withdrawal sooner than later.

Out of ANY lawmaker, Kerry would be the last to support Gates unless there was an over-riding and compelling reason for him to do it. That Gates must be promoting withdrawal behind the scenes can be the only explanation and I would guess that is what he was told by the Iraq SG.

I am not going to LIKE the way the withdrawal comes about, but I will be happy for the Iraqi people and our military that a withdrawal will be happening in ANY form.

7. HERE is further proof that the votes for impeachment WILL BE THERE....
Some of the GOP will undoubtedly circle the wagons around Bush no matter what he does, but others will recognize that Bush is taking them all down with him. They WILL jettison him in order to save their party.

8. Good luck with that
It ain't gonna happen. It will take us a year to actually withdraw after the decision is made.
