1. Didn't much like it myself. Too fussy. But aren't there folks who are
suppose to work with the design houses to make sure things like this don't happen to a first lady?

7. That is exactly the person who came to my mind. There are several
others I could not see having this happen to them. Nancy Reagan for one.

8. Yep - they're in the Office of the Social Secretary
I have never seen anything like this occur before. Three woman all wearing the same $8,500 Oscar de la Renta gown as the First Lady? Major, major faux pas.

Guess this means Laura buys her dresses off-the-rack just like everybody else. Of course, unlike Laura, most women can't afford to throw down over $8,000 for a ball gown. ;)

Nice to see Ms. Baldridge again. What a classy lady she is.

Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 07:42 PM by efhmc
$8,500 to wear a very unoriginal dress. Now that is not good.

They're part of that breed of GOP women to whom money is like water - it flows freely.

17. You got THAT right! I never spent more than $250 a YEAR on
clothes when I was working, and I was a Corp. Director! No slouchy clothes, but good ones bought on sale at the end of the season, and styles that never go away.

13. I guess I've been living under my rock again!
I would have thought if a First Lady is spending $8,500 for a dress, it would have been designed only for her!

18. You nailed it, napi21
That dress should have worn exclusively by Mrs. Bush - and no one else.

Part of the blame rests with the fashion house of Oscar de la Renta. They should have waited until after the event to sell copies of the dress.

The White House Office of the Social Secretary can also share in the blame. A cursory phone call to the designer to ensure that only Mrs. Bush would be wearing the gown would've been in order.

I also don't ever remember a situation like this with any other First Ladies! Maybe Oscar doesnt like Laura?

23. It DEFINITELY should have been a courtesy of the fashion house
Lord knows Oscar de la Renta has dressed Mrs. Bush exclusively for the past five years. There was even a spread of The First Lady in Vogue Magazine not too long ago wearing creations from the House of de la Renta. Can't image any other First Lady being caught dead in a gown that three other women were wearing.

Mr. de la Renta will be catching a lot of grief from somebody at The White House for this. OTOH, they also have themselves to blame for not making that last-minute phone call to the designer to ensure that only Mrs. Bush was wearing this gown.

25. Maybe this is another example of the hate and discontent at the WH.
Even in that video posted here, the moderator talked about how meticulous Jackie Kennedy's assistants were, and NEVER would have let anything like this happen. Maybe Laura's assistants are just getting really tired of all the Shrub BS and either intentionally or unintentionally ignored their duties? Let's wait and see if we hear about a few getting fired over this.

26. Not only Mrs. Kennedy, but also every First Lady up through Mrs. Clinton
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 08:21 PM by Penndems
There is just no way someone as meticulous as Ms. Baldridge would have allowed something like this to happen, if she worked in this Administration.

Now, Mrs. Clinton's gowns were all one-of-a-kind, haute couture creations. Her day clothes were designer, as well, but not necessarily with the extreme price tag. In fact, Mrs. Clinton said something one day that warmed the cuckolds of my heart. She was wearing a St. John suit that she readily admitted was purchased on sale at a St. John Company Store outlet.

What a lady. ;)

31. To tell the truth, I secretly liked my Catholic school uniform for
that reason. I also liked having a white uniform to wear at work when I worked in a doctor's office. Really, it took the pressure off of dressing up and you could spend your money on what you really wanted to wear either out of school or work.

:-)

36. Those uniforms do have that plus.... also, it gives kids something
to rebel against. :)

Given what even very young girls are wearing now, I'm finding myself in the school uniform camp. That would have been unthinkable for me even a few years ago. But, it's all become not just ridiculous, but disgusting!

And, some of those "scrubs" are better looking than what I can find for everyday wear! :hi:
