2:15. His motorcade now includes a SWAT team truck along with about 50 DC cops, 4 limos, at least 10 huge SUVs (usually secret service), and an ambulance. I'm sure there is some extra security because Blair is here, but this is overkill. A SWAT team truck?? Thats the first time I've seen that.

1. Paranoia
Paranoia just like Nixon. He needs all of that protection because he is so well loved by his people. :sarcasm:

3. Did you see the contrast of Clinton in Vietnam, mobbed like a
rock star, while Bush guiltily sneaks in and out untouched by human hands.

7. to be fair, even a "popular" president like Reagan was still shot by a
psycho.

(and no, reagan was not MY popular president, but we was, for some unknown reason, well-liked by others)

I don't begrudge security measures for presidents, per se. I think the threat of assasination is real, regardless of of which president it is. I attended an out door rally in Dayton for Clinton and noted at least 8 sharpshooters on various roofs surrounding courthouse square. I felt comforted they were there, in that situation.

9. Yes, I want him well protected because I would hate to see the
idiots make a martyr of him. Then we would never be rid of his influence.

5. There might be a little extra measure due to Blair
Then again...love for Bush isn't on the upswing. Is it possible it was Cheney (with the ambulance in the motorcade)? Cheney's supposed to be darkening the Capitol doorstep today as they all say their goodbyes.

6. I've seen it...
I think the last time was when Sharon was in town. It is exreme overkill.

I think they draw more attention to themselves than anything. They ought to put him in a souped up Chevette or something, nobody would ever suspect it's the POTUS.

Remember when Darth first moved into the Observatory, he was travelling down 16th Street at 5:00 every morning with the sirens blaring.

It royally pissed off all of the people living along there, especially the seniors, of which there are many. I mean, really, do you need sirens blaring and all of that hoo-ha at 5:00 in the morning in downtown D.C? It's virtually dead until about 7:30.

8. It reminds me of the movie "In the Line of Fire" when...
Clint Eastwood's character makes the comment 'they do it to make the president seem more important than he is' or some words to that effect. I too believe if they just got into an ordinary car and took off no one would know. Instead they blink the lights, have a parade and blare the sirens, to announce to the world his movements.
