Another ISG HIdden Fact: - Saudis Funding Sunni Insurgents Who Are Killing US Soldiers
Edited on Thu Dec-07-06 07:31 PM by kpete
Another of the ISG findings:

Saudis are funding Sunni insurgents who are killing US soldiers

Private Saudi citizens are giving millions of dollars to Sunni insurgents in Iraq and much of the money is used to buy weapons, including shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles, according to key Iraqi officials and others familiar with the flow of cash. .....

But the U.S. Iraq Study Group report said Saudis are a source of funding for Sunni Arab insurgents. Several truck drivers interviewed by The Associated Press described carrying boxes of cash from Saudi Arabia into Iraq, money they said was headed for insurgents.....

Some Saudis appear to know the money is headed to Iraq's insurgents, but others merely give it to clerics who channel it to anti-coalition forces, the officials said.

In one recent case, an Iraqi official said $25 million in Saudi money went to a top Iraqi Sunni cleric and was used to buy weapons, including Strela, a Russian shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile. The missiles were purchased from someone in Romania, apparently through the black market, he said......

Saudi Arabia is a key U.S. ally in the Middle East.

2. This is just awful, because it means the Saudis are interested in fighting Iran...
so that could definitely mean a regional conflict between Saudi Arabia and other Sunni countries and Iran, and what would be left of Iraq.

4. You make a very interesting point..
Could it be the Saudis want us to fight the Iranians for them..Now think about this .As long as we are in Iraq their oil isn't pumped or at least at a minimum.. Its in the best interest of the Saudis to keep Iraqi oil off the market to insure higher priced oil..make sense..
Now if Iran and Iraq both are unstable what does that do for Saudi oil?

5. Right.
This was the point of Nawaf Obaid's op-ed in the Washington Post last week. It is why the Saudi's called Cheney to Riyadh on 11-25. They are on the record as saying there will be a "massive Saudi intervention" (Obaid) to stop any Iranian-backed attacks on Sunnis.
