A Soldier's Christmas
A Soldier's Christmas

Twas the night before christmas,
he lived all alone,
in a one bedroom house made of
plaster and stone.

I had come down the chimney
with presents to give,
and to see just who
in this home did live.

I looked all about,
a strange sight i did see,
no tinsel, no presents,
not even a tree.

No stocking by mantle,
just boots filled with sand,
on the wall hung pictures
of far distant lands.

With medals and badges,
awards of all kinds,
a sober thought
came through my mind.

For this house was different,
it was dark and dreary,
I found the home of a soldier,
once I could see clearly.

The soldier lay sleeping,
silent, alone,
curled up on the floor
in this one bedroom home.

The face was so gentle,
the room in such disorder,
not how i pictured
a United States soldier.

Was this the hero
of whom I'd just read?
curled up on a poncho,
the floor for a bed?

I realized the families
that I saw this night,
owed their lives to these soldiers
who were willing to fight.

Soon round the world,
the children would play,
and grownups would celebrate
a bright Christmas Day.

They all enjoyed freedom
each month of the year,
because of the soldiers,
like the one lying here.

I couldn't help wonder
how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas Eve
in a land far from home.

The very thought
brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees
and started to cry.

The soldier awakened
and I heard a rough voice,
"Santa don't cry,
this life is my choice;

I fight for freedom,
I don't ask for more,
my life is my God,
my Country, my Corps."

The soldier rolled over
and drifted to sleep,
I couldn't control it,
I continued to weep.

I kept watch for hours,
so silent and still
and we both shivered
from the cold night's chill.

I didn't want to leave
on that cold, dark, night,
this guardian of honor
so willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over,
with a voice soft and pure,
whispered, "Carry on Santa,
it's Christmas Day, all is secure."

One look at my watch,
and I knew he was right.
"Merry Christmas my friend,
and to all a good night."

This poem was written by Lt Col Bruce Lovely on Christmas Eve 1993

14. take responsibility
take responsibility
for Peace, for Truth, and for Action.

We dont wait for peace,
we make it.

We dont wait for truth,
we seek it.

We dont wait for the others to take action,
we take it.

So here we are with this damn war in Iraq.

We voted the Dems in.

We worked hard to do it
and what have we got?

Exactly.

We are approaching a milestone,
3000 killed in this War of Bush's Choice.

Oh, and by the way, for every family,
each death is more than a mile stone,
its a mill stone that will hang on their hearts
and life's for generations.

Let me take you to my cousins grave,
my best friend, killed in Vietnam in 1971,
and I will tell you,
weep and tell you how much I miss him.

I miss him so much.
His name is Danny.
He never saw my sons.
They never got to have his love in their life.
Because we didn't stop that War in Vietnam
in time to save his life.

Now, there is a Danny
who is scheduled to be killed in Bush's War of Lies.

He will be the 3000th death.

I have set up a myspace page for this unknown Danny.

But I am asking for you help.

I need ideas,
to keep us from having to put a name on that site.

It is up to you and me to stop the war
in time to save this person who Bush is going to kill.

Congress is going on break,
America is celebrating the birth of the Prince of Peace,
and sometime this month, maybe Christmas day,
we will find out the name
of the 3000th person killed
since Bush Lied the Nation into WAR!

I need your help.
I want to promote this site,
I want individuals to rise up an save this person,
this unknown Danny.

Help me.

Help me to save the 3000th person.

7. My heart is sad because so few DU members have looked at your OP much less read the poem
and understand that there are lots of Democrats who have served and serve in our nation's military.

As others have said,

Honor The Warrior If Not The War

17. I left Vietnam nearly forty years ago. Now I'm crying...
for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. They'll go through the same #### we did. It's a bitch being an old soldier and crying for all the kids.

16. Whoever wrote this poem doesn't really matter - it's beautiful.
I truly thank all soldiers serving now or who have served in the past for their service. I don't know that America would be as strong as it is without you - yes I do, it wouldn't. I've never even been close to a war because of you, and really don't know how I would act if we had a war right here. I would hope that I would be a brave as you have been, but I just don't know and don't want to know. It takes very special people to be in the military, and we have the best in the world. Bless all of you.
