9% of Americans expect a clear-cut US victory in Iraq. Who are these people?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16107249/

<snip>The latest numbers evoke parallels to public opinion about the war in Vietnam four decades ago. Just 9 percent expect the Iraq war to end in clear-cut victory, compared with 87 percent who expect some sort of compromise settlement. A similar question asked by Gallup in December 1965, when the American side of the war still had eight years to run, found just 7 percent believed the war in Vietnam would end in victory.

3. Those are the 9% who actually know what the 'mission' and 'victory' definitions are.
The rest of us, haven't a clue after 4 years of asking.

4. They're all posting over at FR and...
CU...although most in that latter group appear to be Canadians and other foreigners trying to tell us how to run our affairs. Them, and a small handful of rabid vets of the "I served in a desk job at Fort Dix back in the eighties so you'd have the freedom to post this shit here!" type, who use their rank as their screen name, and pictures of eagles and waving flags for avatars.

8. The kind of people
The kind of people who think nuking the middle east to glass would be a victory. We have the power to do that, and they expect Little Boots to do it to achieve victory.

11. Nothing to Lose
I may be wrong, but maybe those in the 8% group have nothing to lose in the war. Maybe their kids are not in Iraq risking their lives. Maybe it is easier to believe in victory when your kids are not at risk. Also, they could all be Rush Limbaugh listeners who are being told that the Iraq Survey Group just said the war was very winnable. I know that is not actually what the ISG said, but I have heard that Limbaugh's listeners rely soley on him for information so maybe he just keep lying to his listeners.

12. What is a "clear cut" victory? Is that like clear cutting a forest?
Edited on Fri Dec-08-06 12:34 PM by bluerum
Or is it the economic, religious, political, and cultural conversion of Iraq into something more recognizable as North American?

Or does it mean that we can just take all the oil and resources that we want with no opposition?

What the hell does victory mean in this context - to this 9%?

Does it mean that all the terra-istas now in Iraq are sent packing back home to Saudi Arabia? Does it mean every terra-ista is put into a Guantanamo-like prison or killed?

Can these 9% please articulate what they mean, please explain beyond a simple jingo-istic bumper sticker thought process? Or is this the best that we can ever expect from them?

14. They are 9% who live in fear.
And won't ever believe the world is round.

I work with a couple of folks that march in lock step with BushCo no matter what happens.
I've given up trying to reason with them. Might as well throw them into one of those illegal detention facilities; naw, they would still vote for *.

15. Could it be that these are the ones who still think that the war in
the ME is the signal of the second coming of Jesus and they mistakenly think he is going to come as a general of their army?

19. When the White House was selling the war, they said it's purpose
was to disarm Saddam Hussein. So a clear-cut victory has already been achieved.

I'm just a bit confused as to why we're still occupying the place.
