GOP absolves self in the Foley scandal
Breaking news from The Hill
House GOP leaders were negligent
but did not break rules in Foley matter

By Susan Crabtree

The House ethics committee wrapped up its investigation into the
scandal surrounding former Rep. Mark Foley’s (R-Fla.) improper electronic
communications with male pages, finding that GOP leaders did not break
any rules in handling the issue but were negligent because they failed
to be more proactive in protecting the teenage pages, according to the
report.

Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.), the panel’s chairman, said that there
are some positive lessons to be learned from the scandal.

“Each of us on our investigative subcommittee recognizes that 20/20
hindsight is easy … but that doing the right thing can be
difficult,” he told reporters gathered in the Capitol for a press conference.

But he implored members and staffers to “renew their determination”
to seek out and take action when they see improper behavior of any
kind.

1. I knew we could trust the Repubs to investigate themselves.

12. What was the answer?
I've been wondering about that for a long time.

16. I don't believe it was a true interrogatory as I don't think that
Cain had any expectation of a response. Rather, he said it as a rhetorical statement.

That the party of God, ethics, morals, family values, George Bush, and conservatism would just brush off the potential molestation of boys in this manner!

What is the world coming to?!?!?!?!?!

4. If they've ADMITTED "negligence," that carries serious legal consequences
"Negligence" is still a very serious issue, and is not actually an absolution. Although, that will be the net result of this, if they choose to just let it go at this report.

8. Yeah, there really isn't a lot left here...they've lost everything
At least partly because of this. Everybody knows what a scum Foley is, and what scum his protectors are. I'd refer to any of the outgoing Congressional leadership as "The self-admitted negligent protector of child molestor Mark Foley."

Let this follow them everywhere.

13. Above the law?
That's a universal truth, not limited to one side of the aisle.

Did anyone think the republicans would find themselves guilty and resign in disgrace? It was enough that they lose the houses, though that message will somehow get lost in the fog of arrogance.

Regards.
