1. Jeb! is a piece of shit.
How fast did FEMA clean up the rich white peoples' problems after that last hurricane, and why isn't that in the news?

2. No offense, but ...
... please don't use the term "retards."

How about saying "cretins" instead? (A person of subnormal intelligence.) The term "cretin" is not used to describe people who are born with mental limitations, but rather those who apparently refuse to use the intelligence they have.

Thanks.

4. Um, excuse me.
Wile I did not mean to offend your sensibilities, I will not acquiesce to you call for more P.C. wording of my comments. I think "retard" is accurate in that fundies (IMO) are intelligence deficient and may suffer from retardation of the brain. So to recap, they are retards.

9. No, I can't excuse the use of the word "retard."
There are many members of DU, needless to mention non-member visitors, who have family members that are medically "retarded." It's a gross insult to use the word casually, and my objection to it has nothing to do with being politically correct. This subject has been brought up on DU several times.

It's a question of do you care whether you hurt someone with your words or not. The word "retard" and the word "cretin" conjure different mental images.

18. OK
and while I see your point, I respectfully disagree. Maybe I am just a neanderthal, but I have stopped trying to be PC, since no matter where one draws the line, there is always someone else telling you your words hurt their feeling or were insensitive. I didn't mean/want to start a completely different debate from the thread I started, so I will just ask that we let it go and agree to disagree. OK?

23. Everyone has their own opinion on this subject.
I just don't believe it's a matter of being politically correct. The word "retard" strikes a nerve in me just as surely as the word "nigger" strikes a nerve, and I think it stems from empathy or compassion for others, or the Golden Rule or however you want to phrase it. Yes, I'll give this a rest for now, but, if you would, please consider using another word instead in the future. When it comes to bush supporters, the list of appropriate derogatory terms is endless.

24. Agreed and I apologogise.
But equating "retard" and "nigger" is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?

25. No, I don't think it's a stretch.
But that would involve a long detailed explanation of the origins of how those words came to take on derogatory meaning far beyond the original utterance.

I'm basically just going by my emotional barometer when I hear those words. That's what I'm trying to convey, and I certainly didn't mean to put you in a position where you feel like an apology was necessary.

I think we have beat this horse to death. Come, let us go bash some bushies! :7

21. Thank you Straigh Shooter, I haven't addressed that, but support you on it
I cringe whenever I see that word tossed around here, and in the media, so lightly. Not trying to be the politically correct police, but it is a hurtful term to people who have children or family members who are retarded. It should not be an insult.. but like being obese, it's one of the allowable prejudices in America.

3. If the religiously insane get their way
in 50 years we will have switched places with the Chinese. We will be doing the semi-skilled work for starvation wages because no one in the US will be scientifically literate enough to do anything else. Why doesn't pig-face Jeb just box up his state's biotech industries and send them to East Asia? That's where they will be heading.

Unless we maintain healthy diet of skepticism and scientific inquiry into life's mysteries, we will become the undereducated, low wage, 3rd world country you refer to.

6. I've got news for you - it's already happening
My fiance works for a large tech company in Orlando that does fiber optic lenses. They were just informed recently that the company is opening up a large plant in Shanghai, and that eventually most of their jobs will be going to China.

10. Correct, but it won't take 50 years. The ground work has already been
laid and the Chinese are graduating your replacements now. I'd say it will take no longer than 10 - 15 years, IMO.

17. Dubya is a member of the United Methodist Church but he does not
follow church doctrine as outlined in the Book of Discipline.

For example Bush does not follow the following UMC doctrine:
QUOTE
War and Peace
We believe war is incompatible with the teachings and example of Christ. We therefore reject war as an instrument of national foreign policy, to be employed only as a last resort in the prevention of such evils as genocide, brutal suppression of human rights, and unprovoked international aggression. We insist that the first moral duty of all nations is to resolve by peaceful means every dispute that arises between or among them; that human values must outweigh military claims as governments determine their priorities; that the militarization of society must be challenged and stopped; that the manufacture, sale, and deployment of armaments must be reduced and controlled; and that the production, possession, or use of nuclear weapons be condemned. Consequently, we endorse general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control.
UNQUOTE

It is just as offensive as "nigger"

Besides, most specially challenged people propbably would never vote Republican. All the Republicans do is cut their benefits.

And when Floridians are tired of graduating kids unqualified to become doctors, nurses researchers or maybe even unqualified to attend any unviersity other than Bob Jones they will elect people with sense and maybe have learned an important lesson. (hopefully) (with apologies to those sensible Floridians who are already outraged.)
