NBC is reporting that Sen Tim Johnson (D-SD) has had a stroke
or an apparent stroke. Even if you're not the praying kind this is a good moment to send out a prayer for the Senator.

If Sen Johnson is incapacitated, Mike Rounds, Governor and right wing repuke will appoint his successor.

Let's hope it's only a TIA or stress or something.

Get well quickly Senator. We need you.

2. In SD isn't the appointed successor only until they hold special elections?
I'm almost positive it is.

9. No
Unfortunately, any replacement would serve until the next general election (2008) according to NBC.

11. You're right.
South Dakota Constitution

12-11-4. Temporary appointment by Governor to fill vacancy in United States Senate. Pursuant to the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, the Governor may fill by temporary appointment, until a special election is held pursuant to this chapter, vacancies in the office of senator in the Senate of the United States.

Source: SL 1979, ch 99, § 1.

But SD is a red state, and a repub incumbent, even an appointed one, would have a huge advantage.

15. Don't be so sure of that
They've been doing pretty good for a "red state" at electing Democrats to the Senate. Remember this was also where Tom Daschle hailed from.

Hopefully it won't come down to this, but if it does it could go either way.

20. NO VACANCY!!!!!
There is NO VACANCY!!!!

Sen. Johnson's seat in the US Senate remains HIS seat UNTIL such time as it becomes VACANT!!!!

We NEEd to focus our energy on wishing Sen. Johnson a speedy and full recovery.

NOT speculating on what might happen if the worst happens.

GET WELL SEN. JOHNSON!!!!

6. Actually, in all fairness
they aren't. I was just over there, and though there's some speculation on who/how he'd be replaced, they're all being nice.

19. I don't know about the freepers, but hasn't Pat Robertson been praying for such things?
He was praying for supreme court justices to die or resign.

7. Don't get your nickers in a wad yet
Remember, Senator Thomas from Wyoming (R) is suffering from leukemia. The governor of Wyoming is a Democrat. If something terrible happened to Senator Thomas and I don't wish any illness or suffering on anyone because of their politics, the Wyoming governor would appoint a Democrat. Remember that Arlen Specter had cancer this past session of Congress and recovered. So while I agree we should pray for Senator Thomas let's not paint the picture so dire until we have more facts.

8. No, not in Wyoming
Wyoming is one of those states where the replacement senator is selected by the governor from a list provided by the senator's party. Thus there wouldn't be a party shift.

10. It depends on state law though.
I'm not certain, but WY (and hopefully SD, too) may have laws that require when a Gov. appoints, he/she must appoint an individual from the same party for the seat.

13. and let's not forget that ole Strom hung in there long after he was brain-dead
he LIVED in a hospital, and they wheeled him in and grabbed hold of his bony cloven hoof and "helped" him vote....this went on for years..

Johnson is not an old man, and may make a good recovery.. at least while he's recovering, he would surely be eligible for a leave of absence like Specter took, and not lose his seat.

12. Better info on LBN near bottom of thread
Said he felt ill today. They got House Physician to examine him. Sent by ambulance to hospital. So far it looks like if it was a stroke it may have been mild.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Sen. Johnson and his family. And for our country.

that minimizes the effects of a stroke?

14. Remember Wm Casey, DCI at the CIA had a stroke which avoided his
testimony on Iran Contra. Bob Gates was his assistant back then.

A stroke? Hmmm...
