Johnson was the wrong Senator to assassinate if the GOP wanted to take back the Senate
Edited on Thu Dec-14-06 08:17 AM by Hippo_Tron
South Dakota election law requires a special election be held to replace a Senator that leaves office. Yes Mike Rounds gets to appoint a Republican to fill the seat until the special election. But here's the thing. There are two extremely qualified South Dakota Democrats that can step in and run in that special election: Stephanie Herseth and Tom Daschle. The GOP would have AT BEST a 50/50 chance of winning that special election.

If they wanted to assassinate a Senator they would do it somewhere where the Democrats don't have any qualified candidates to step up and challenge the Republican Governor's appointment. Nebraska would be a perfect example of this.

We need to remember that Senators are mortals just like us.

15. Yes you are, and I appreciate the fact that you're not afraid to say it
There's tremendous pressure on this board to shut up and pretend there are no evil plots. That pressure is expected from the Cons, but when it comes from our side it means they've won the mind control battle.

18. Nobody was assasinated in the Johnson family yesterday.
Obviously I did not mean that nobody has ever been assasinated. There is no evidence that Carnahan was assasinated. People actually die from other causes.

10. Yeah, they'd've chosen more strategically
Somewhere where there's a GOP Governor and a strong GOP replacement.

Wellstone, yeah I think they whacked him, Johnson, no, I don't think this one's their doing.

11. Do you know what the timing would be?
That "until" thing you mentioned concerns me. We need both houses to get done what needs to get done now and there is much urgency to do them.

Steps would seem to be:

Johnson determined unable to serve (by whom?)
Special election declared/date set
Nominations
Campaigning
Election day (hopefully not close enough to get Floriduhd)
Swearing in

Read the entire law in question. The appointee would serve out the remainder of Johnson's term.

14. Actually under S. Dakota election law - special election would
be held at the next general election, which is two years from the election last month.

12-11-4. Temporary appointment by Governor to fill vacancy in United States Senate. Pursuant to the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, the Governor may fill by temporary appointment, until a special election is held pursuant to this chapter, vacancies in the office of senator in the Senate of the United States.

12-11-5. Special election to fill senate vacancy. The special election to fill the vacancy of a senator shall be held at the same time as the next general election. The general election laws shall apply unless inconsistent with this chapter.
