Conspiracy theories have never bothered me.
I guess I'm weird, but I don't get angry or emotional when I hear someone suggest a theory as to why our crazy government does the things it does. When I see someone has started a thread with a theory, I don't automatically call that person insulting names, I read his or her thread, and move on.

Why do conspiracy theorists draw such violently negative responses? I never talk about bigfoot, or the Loch Ness monster, or Elvis sightings, or UFO's, but mention any doubt about official stories versus theories and you get put into the UFO/crop circle jerk punishment room.

In fact, history has proven many wild conspiracy theories to be true, and many times it took decades for the truth to surface. Deathbed confessions, whistle blowers, investigative journalism, sometimes the craziest theories actually turn out to be true, sometimes.

Please don't automatically ridicule those of us who theorize, true, some of ARE nuts, but some of us are vindicated too, sometimes.

I always reserve the right to pre emptively suggest that I could be totally wrong, on any given subject, and I've been proven wrong on many occasions, and right on a few too.

1. Fear of being ridiculed themselves
A fearful person see someone "acting crazy" (in this case a conspiracy theorist), and the first reaction from the fearful person is to kick the "crazy" person as soon as possible, so as to ensure that other folks won't think the fearful person is tacitly (or overtly) agreeing with the "crazy" person.

I trace it back to the pack mentality on elementary school playgrounds.

Me, I am proud to believe every conspiracy theory that comes down the pike, because when they're proven right, I can hold my head high. And if they're proven wrong, I shrug and admit I took the wrong side. So what?

2. I've been a nut since 1963.
We all know what happened, or what supposedly happened on that day.

3. Being a conspiracy nut means
having an open mind.
I have no problem with anyone wearing tinfoil hats these days, as sometimes I am one of them!

4. You can't seem to get off of this
tangent can you? Or understand why so many of us find the CTs about Senator Johnson objectionable at this time. And that clearly includes the administration of DU.

9. Coincidently - Conspiracy Theories Aside - You Have To Admit That If Something Happens....
to Senator Johnson to throw the balance of the Senate back to the Repugs that * is really, really a lucky guy.

10. Doesn't bother me either

...but apparently it bothers a lot of people here.

Sometimes I agree we don't know the whole story and other times I think that they are way out there...however I DO respect the right that others have a different opinion than mine.

Cheers

12. Many conspiracy theories have at their root ugly things like racism
or culturalism.

I.e., 19 Muslim men just COULDN'T have hijacked airplanes and flown them into buildings. There has to be something more powerful and sinister to blame. (Not spoken: those Ay-rabs are too stupid to do this on their own, it has to have been someone else!)

Etc.

13. Considering recent history
and how it gets sanitized for mass comsumption, conspiracy theories are often discounted out of hand because "our government/officials wouldn't do anything like THAT!"

Never say never.

P.S. I thought I heard about Elvis being a greeter at Wal-Mart, but I'm not sure. :D

14. Fear. Some ridicule and try to intimidate theorists into silence due to fear.
There are a lot of people, yes, even here at DU, who just don't want to think too much about what might be out there in the dark really intent on harming them. And people tend to figure everyone is like themselves, with the same inhibitions and limits. THAT is a quirk of human nature really bad people count on for cover.

That ol 'ignorance is bliss' bugger has a brother - 'don't really wanna think about that' and he might be an even bigger problem than ignorance. ;)

When the same people seem to have all the 'luck' it reminds me of voting machines which only make errors which consistently favor one party... not likely to be coincidence.

15. It's not about
fear for me. It's about critical thinking skills. I'm quite aware of the dark side of humanity, thank you very much, but i'm also aware of Occam's razor, and of the fact that some of the more fantastic cts I've seen proposed would entail a boggling number of people keeping quiet, something humans have a very tough time doing.

16. You stay in the "safe zone" if you don't bother to ask questions
People don't want to look like a nutcase, so it is easier to make yourself out to be someone of "logic" rather than question the "official" story. Anyone involved in a conspiracy is banking on the "logical" people to cover their ass.

As you stated, many "wild conspiracy theories" have come to light many years after the fact. Also, the term "conspiracy" has become equivalent to "wacky theory", but there are conspiracies going on all the time and they all aren't about assassinations.

Once again, it is better to stay safe and try to look like a logical thinker than someone who questions weird "coincidences".

I personally don't think there was anything "dark" about Sen Johnson, but I won't laugh at people for asking questions.
