White House Was Against Energy Conservation Before It Was For It
White House Press Briefing with Ari Fleischer, 5/7/01:

QUESTION: Does the President believe that, given the amount of energy Americans consume per capita, how much it exceeds any other citizen in any other country in the world, does the President believe we need to correct our lifestyles to address the energy problem?

FLEISCHER: That’s a big no. The President believes that it’s an American way of life.

4. energy conservation
Bush's turning on energy conservation is not really a flip-flop, but rather the republicans' way of bastardizing popular views to fit their own agenda. See, Bush will support energy conservation, but only in the sense that he promoted clean air, left no child behind, provided AIDS relief to Africa and rebuilt Iraq. Sure, as with his other initiatives he'll be able to hand out a few lucrative no-bid contracts to churches and defense groups (what do they have to do with energy conservation?), but any new energy conservation will be merely paying lip service, and will have no substance.

5. Republicans, all, were against conservation before they were for it.
Remember Ronnie attacking Carter for even suggesting the idea. Some statement like; "Americans should not have to sacrifice..."
