1. thanks...just heard about this today on Wisconsin Pub Radio.
Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 03:27 PM by Gabi Hayes
a science teacher called in and said that his national group (National Science Teachers Association) is choosing not to participate, because of something to do with the money it costs to have the DVD shipped, IIRC

he said that there was an underlying political reason for their refusal to participate as a group. wonder what that could have been.....

pretty disgusting stuff, if true, though

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/24/AR2006112400789_pf.html

It's bad enough when a company tries to sell junk science to a bunch of grown-ups. But, like a tobacco company using cartoons to peddle cigarettes, Exxon Mobil is going after our kids, too.

And it has been doing so for longer than you may think. NSTA says it has received $6 million from the company since 1996, mostly for the association's "Building a Presence for Science" program, an electronic networking initiative intended to "bring standards-based teaching and learning" into schools, according to the NSTA Web site. Exxon Mobil has a representative on the group's corporate advisory board. And in 2003, NSTA gave the company an award for its commitment to science education.

So much for special interests and implicit endorsements.

In the past year alone, according to its Web site, Exxon Mobil's foundation gave $42 million to key organizations that influence the way children learn about science, from kindergarten until they graduate from high school.

7. The NSTA Does A Disservice To Our Children
I know a couple of teachers who are outraged by their actions. And the NSTA should be ashamed of themselves.

6. That's really a shame...

That's what happens when a political agenda clouds the issue. However, I just donated a copy to my school board's Science Dept. and not one word about politics was spoken. Although, the Director said he would leave it to the discretion of the teachers as to whether they wished to show it... which I hope they do.

5. I work in a grade school, and will be showing it to the "Ecology Club"
advisor when we go back, and will see if it can be shown in class, either as part of the curriculum, or as a "special event"

hard to tell, given the apparent conservative bent of the, luckily, soon to be retiring principal

9. Tell him this is a Conservative issue too
So unfortunate that this has been made to be seen as such a polarizing political issue when it is not. This isn't exclusively a Democratic or Republican issue, this is an issue of our survival as a species on a planet that can sustain us. Perhaps the footage of Mr. Gore's past put off people of certain political persuasions... but that is only because they see it from a political angle, rather than the human angle I believe Mr. Gore and the director Davis Guggenheim were telling that story from.... that to almost lose someone precious in your life like your son, and to lose someone precious to you like a sister, and even the heartbreak of an election that opens your eyes, makes you realize how hard we must now work not to lose this planet which is so precious to all of us.
