Pelosi denies CSPAN's request for cameras on House floor

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, denied a request Friday by CSPAN to install its own cameras on the House floor.

Under the current arrangement, the House cameras are solely operated under the discretion of the speaker, CSPAN Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brian Lamb told CNN.

The speakers sole control of the cameras "does a disservice to the institution and to the public," Lamb said in a letter to Pelosi requesting a change.

In a letter to CSPAN, Pelosi responded, "I believe that the dignity and decorum of the United States House of Representatives are best preserved by maintaining the current system of televised proceedings."

1. Nancy, don't forget Sensenbrenner's 'dignity' and 'decorum' in the
recent past. Men acting like that should be captured imo.

4. due to DU constraints I didn't post the entire article...
the rest actually address your post:

<snip>

CSPAN also was unable to convince the GOP of the same request in 1995.

"Every chance you get you have to ask...we want more access," Lamb told CNN.

6. What evidence do you have that they did not make a similar request of the republican leadership?
It was turned down before?

22. Talk about jumping to conclusions
They made that request repeatedly throught the years that the pukes controlled the House.

3. Where's Lamb's letter to the Repugs
when they stopped letting CSpans cameras in?

Pay back is a mother, isn't it?

24. The issue isn't that they stopped letting cameras in
they haven't done that.

The issue is having unfettered, unedited coverage of the entire chamber, instead of the camera being trained only on the person talking at the podium as it is right now; along with presenting the votes as they go down, so the audience can see their rep's voting record as it's happening instead of waiting like they do now.

The letter to the thugs was written in 1995--if you can google it and find it, then post it.

I'm sure Speaker Pelosi made her decision in the best interests of the House.

Just like Hastart.

11. Brian Lamb
Was on NPR yesterday. He talked about the deal making going on in corners on the House floor. He also mentioned Tom Delay saying when asked about the cameras under C-Span control "Like Hell They Will"

12. Brian Lamb isn't trustworthy anymore. Remember "Fascist Friday?"
He's on the Board and not running the show according to an article posted here on DU a week or so ago. Susan Swain and one of the others is now in charge. Brian's on the Board but the article didn't say who else was on the Board ...and that was worrysome.

I'm sure he wants access but he shouldn't get it ...because RW will use it to hound Dems for every little "corner meeting" and we know the RW Think Tanks get alot of airtime on C-Span...so they are the ones who probably want the spy cam on the Dems.

13. There's a simple explanation for why Nancy turned him down...
because most of the time, whoever is speaking on the House floor is speaking to an empty room. The members just aren't there. She (and Speakers before her) don't want cameras on empty seats. It looks bad.

19. Is that really why?
I wonder. I've tuned in to CSPAN plenty of times and seen Congressfolk speaking to empty seats. It's not like it's real hard to tell--is it, usually? (again, just based on my viewing experiences.)

14. very disappointing.
politically, changing the rules would damage her -- but this is a change that The People needed in order to feel like the "new boss" isn't playing the same game as "the old boss."

sheesh.

16. It's kind of a mixed bag.
On the one hand, the people feel like they should be able to see everything - so they know what's going on. I serve on a commission and our meetings are televised. I've seen that the TV 'spotlight' deters, distorts or waters down some discussions. In the House and the Senate, we know there are countless 'deals' and 'agreements' that take place off the floor. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not sure the people would actually get the 'benefit' they think they will with constant coverage. To me, the best way to stay informed is to: (1) watch what is available on C-Span;(2) check on bills awaiting action and (3)read transcripts. Oh - and read DU!

of shady deals and corporate dominance in the People's House. Empty Seats in the House of Representatives? Where are they? In the hallways making deals with corporate lobbyists! We want streaming live video from every representatives' seat and podiums! We want to be able to see them individually and as a body! A government of, by, and for the People will not perish if we watch them like hawks! Get ready for your close-ups! We're zooming in on you! And we're PISSED!

20. Hmmm, hard to know on this one...
...on the one hand, I'm all for transparent government and would welcome a more complete picture of the activities going on in the House, including the empty seats.

On the other hand, I don't trust that the corporate media will do a fair job. I'd like to believe that they'd go after Democrats and Republicans alike -- but recent experience puts the lie to that naive hope.

On balance, I think Nancy is right to retain control for now. Remember, this is how it has been since cameras were allowed in to the chamber, so why should our incoming Speaker cede control from the outset? It would very likely be used against her, to weaken her party and her Speakership. I'm willing to wait, and let our side see what they can do under existing rules. I don't need her to give up control just to prove a point.

26. I agree with your points.
Seemed like a good way to to contrast the governing styles of us vs. them. Perhaps she doesn't want to give up editing control....it certainly could be used as a political weapon if CSPAN was so inclined. Funny how the complaints register now but I never heard this when Republicans were controlling the House. Hopefully, "no" means "we need to negotiate what you can and can't do with your subjective control of the camera lens".
