2. Yeah, because pissing
on the body of Ford is just so attractive. The most ironic thing here is the howls of righteos indignation that will undoubtedly arise when freepers make similar comments about Carter when he passes on. Ford was human. He erred, but all in all he was a decent man. Fuck all the nasty posts like this one. Too many Duers never learned that silence isn't always complicity; sometimes it's the better part of valor.

5. I, for one, agree with you Philosoraptor;
I recall the brakes being applied when he pardoned Nixon and all the falling curtains which surrounded the government's illegal activities were re-raised.

do remember that when Nixon died, the MSM attempted to resurrect all the positive things he had done, EPA, going to China,...and...well, I can't think of too many others at this time.

11. I agree with Cali
This pissing on Ford seems just too childish and freeperish.
Let the man go and rest in peace.
He did the best job he was capable of, just as we all do. He never envisioned being POTUS, I'm sure, but all in all, he didn't do too much harm, as opposed to the little twat we have in the WH now.

14. Principles before personalities
It is possible, even important, to point out the truth about Ford without resorting to vulgarity, I agree with you on that. Ford may have been a nice man, but he's sort of the missing link between Prescott's Nixon and today's Bushies. He probably didn't realize it at the time, but he really was just another cog in the BFEE. People need to connect that dot.

6. Ted Kennedy Would Disagree
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 08:11 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Remarks by Senator Edward M. Kennedy

I'm honored to be here today with President Gerald R. Ford, the winner of this year’s Profile in Courage Award, and Congressman John Lewis, the recipient of the Profile in Courage Lifetime Achievement Award.

In his book, President Kennedy told the stories of courageous political leaders who faced crucial decisions and made them under great pressure, and often at great risk to their own careers. I believe my brother would be especially pleased with our winners this year. He would feel that their stories of courage would have made outstanding new chapters in his book.

At a time of national turmoil, America was fortunate that it was Gerald Ford who took the helm of the storm-tossed ship of state. Unlike many of us at the time, President Ford recognized that the nation had to move forward, and could not do so if there was a continuing effort to prosecute former President Nixon. So President Ford made a courageous decision, one that historians now say cost him his office, and he pardoned Richard Nixon.

I was one of those who spoke out against his action then. But time has a way of clarifying past events, and now we see that President Ford was right. His courage and dedication to our country made it possible for us to begin the process of healing and put the tragedy of Watergate behind us. He eminently deserves this award, and we are proud of his achievement.

13. And let's not forget ERISA,
which Ford signed into law on 9/4/74. I'm sure there are parts of it that are good and will protect your retirement. (Well, OK, I'm not SURE.) But anyone who has tried and failed to collect benefits from an employer-sponsored insurance plan knows what a nightmare those five letters are. In a disability case, even if you win, they can get away without paying. You could spend your life in court and still not get a dime. Great plan for the insurance company, rotten plan for employees.

With the number of disabled DUers around, I'm surprised I haven't seen mention of this yet.

Thanks, ERISA .... and thanks, Gerald Ford. :puke:

36. that's what I remembered about him too
but he slammed Carter pretty bad in the debate when he brought up how many bills Carter had vetoed as Governor. Would bi-partisanship be a bad thing, or would we expect a Democratic President to veto bills from a Republican Congress?

30. Rest in Piss?
Classy.

I'd trade almost ANY republican in public life today for Gerry Ford. The pro affirmative-action, pro gay-rights, pro-choice Gerry Ford.

Do the childish rants somehow improve your liberal credentials? Last night some schmuck expressed sorrow that Ford's death wasn't more painful.

Politics is meant to serve our humanity. When we relinquish our humanity in the name of politics, we may as well pack it in.

39. Gerarld Ford appeared to be the all American nice guy.
I recall his self deprecating manner when he said. "I'm a Ford not a Lincoln." It sounded vert refreshing after the imperial presidency of Nixon.

BUT He cannot escape being judged poorly. He admitted to altering the Warren commision report to reflect a more favorable back bullet entry in Kennedy's jacket to better fit in with the magic bullet theory. His pardon of Nixon was ill advised. Perhaps everyone was relieved not to have to face a criminal prosecution but I personally feel that such a prosecution was well in order! Who knows what light may have been shed on some of the darkest parts of history while probing into Nixon's history? The fact that he was intimately a part of the Bush crime family having been a protoge of Prescott Bush and in the thick of clandestine operations against Cuba ( and I have little doubt played some role in the JFK murder)figured much larger in the pardon than any desire to "spare the American people" blah, blah, blah.

American's have been far to willing to allow the criminal doings of its government go unchallenged let alone prosecuted. We have paid a great price for such magnanimity. It is likely that the whole government structure wished to hush up the really nasty truth for fear of what it might do to the country and whom it might tarnish. The politicians first allegiance is to themselves then the party then the "system" maybe then the nation. Ford was instrumental in maintaining the staus quo, only the status quo was propped up by a really rotten mass of crime and corruption which it was his duty to keep hidden.

41. Good post
I agree...we all deplore the Republican Party of today....the anti-affirmative action, anti-gay rights, pro-same-sex banning Constitution amendment, anti-choice party of George W. Bush and the religious right. And yet when a Republican such as Gerald Ford espoused the exact opposite of these reactionary policies...there are some here who hoped that Ford's death was more painful. And, of course, "rest in piss". It's sad, really.

Gerald Ford was a Republican. He wasn't, by any stretch of the imagination, a great President. He did some things that I wasn't crazy about. But he was, in the end, a basically good, honorable man. He sure as fuck wasn't Hitler reincarnated.
