Susan and Jack don't get protection. Betty does, but the kids are out of luck and have been for some time. The SS isn't responsible for their protection, and the Cap Hill police have responsibility for the security of the rotunda. The only thing the SS have to worry about is Betty, at this point.

They changed the rules as to how long the protection is given to the Prez and spouse (kids get it until age 16 if the Prez has left office), but Ford was grandfathered so Betty is still entitled.

Mrs. Ford was also shaking hands so perhaps that's what the talking head meant.

If Betty was there as well, then the SS would certainly have a concern or two, but not many, really, unless some crazed bum decided to strangle the poor woman or kill her with a swift kick or a karate chop....they have to go through the detectors before they can get into the building.

At least the crowd is better dressed for this one--the Reagan one was pretty damned casual, given the time of year. I guess if you are a dead President and you don't want to have a boatload of bare navels, large hairy guts, flip flops, thongs peeking out of short shorts, and so forth, you need to die when the weather is cold!
