Olbermann: Special comment about ‘sacrifice’
BBC reports Bush will reveal troop surge plan in sacrifice-themed speech
SPECIAL COMMENT
By Keith Olbermann
Anchor, 'Countdown'
MSNBC

For the Americans who will die because of you, it will be as permanent as it gets.

If in your presence an individual tried to sacrifice an American serviceman or woman, would you intervene?

Would you at least protest?

What if he had already sacrificed 3,003 of them?

What if he had already sacrificed 3,003 of them — and was then to announce his intention to sacrifice hundreds, maybe thousands, more?

This is where we stand tonight with the BBC report of President Bush’s “new Iraq strategy,” and his impending speech to the nation, which, according to a quoted senior American official, will be about troop increases and “sacrifice.”

The president has delayed, dawdled and deferred for the month since the release of the Iraq Study Group.

He has seemingly heard out everybody, and listened to none of them.

If the BBC is right — and we can only pray it is not — he has settled on the only solution all the true experts agree cannot possibly work: more American personnel in Iraq, not as trainers for Iraqi troops, but as part of some flabby plan for “sacrifice.”

Sacrifice!

Who knew mental illness was so rampant in our nation?

5. "Mister Bush" --- and "sir": Powerful and too true words.
"you and you alone...sir...so you can say YOU did not lose in Iraq."

Every American should be required to see this.

21. "Sir"
It was almost as though he couldn't possibly say the word with more disgust. I thought the times he said sir were almost as powerful as the broader statement.

29. I often said it in much the same way to various Generals & Colonels
when I was in the USAF. Inflection is everything but it isn't something they can actually bust you for.
Happily it's one of those words that can convey respect or disgust but on paper there's no distinction.

65. C-U-R...you read my mind.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cur

Cur refers to a dog, usually of mixed ancestry. In common usage, the term is often derogatory; fighting dogs that regress to growling rather than maintain calm are referred to as 'curs'.

T'ain't a complimentary phrase, that's for darn sure.

73. What's funny is that Freepers will assume he's being disrespectful.
But the AP Stylebook, the "bible" of reporting, says that on second reference, "Mr. Bush," is perfectly acceptable after he's first been called "president."

22. He dismembered Bush and McCain
Mr. Bush, you do not own this country!
First we sent Americans to their deaths for your lie, Mr. Bush.

Now we are sending them to their deaths for your ego...
John McCain may still hear the applause of small crowds — he has somehow inured himself to the hypocrisy, and the tragedy, of a man who considers himself the ultimate realist, courting the votes of those who support the government telling visitors to the Grand Canyon that it was caused by the Great Flood.

That Mr. McCain is selling himself off to the irrational right, parcel by parcel, like some great landowner facing bankruptcy, seems to be obvious to everybody but himself.

Or, maybe it is obvious to him and he simply no longer cares.

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Adios McCain.

27. Then there is the argument that
to take any steps toward reducing troop numbers would show weakness to the enemy in Iraq, or to the terrorists around the world.

This simplistic logic ignores the inescapable fact that we have indeed already showed weakness to the enemy, and to the terrorists.

We have shown them that we will let our own people be killed for no good reason.

We have now shown them that we will continue to do so.

We have shown them our stupidity.

Mr. Bush, your judgment about Iraq — and now about “sacrifice” — is at variance with your people’s, to the point of delusion.

RIGHT ON!

not just the delivery. Once again KO has so eloquently said what so many wish they had the voice for, myself included in that group. I especially love the throw down of McCain, not only did he address sir, he laid it out on McCain, too. Someone correct me if I am wrong, was that the first time we have seen graphic photos being used on tv? I thought that was extremely poignant to see what we have not been allowed to see while he was bringing it.

61. He keeps getting better and better. But will anyone hear this?
These words need to be trumpeted from all corners of the country. As long as all the major news networks continue to treat this clown as if he's legitimate we'll never get anywhere. Bush is clearly insane and incapable of holding his position but they will continue to legitimize him and act as if this shit is normal. He simply must be removed from power by any means necessary or we all lose and lose big time.

85. My son doesn't own a TV and hadn't ever heard one of Keith's
commentary's, but was over last night when this one came on. I, of course, shut everyone up so I could listen.

My son was enthralled! He kept saying "Is he going to get in trouble saying that?" and "I can't believe they are letting him say that." I asked him if he disagreed with anything Keith said, and he said no, but he was just amazed to hear someone on TV say those things. Said that he was surprised the administration lets him stay on TV.

Now, the boy is only 21 and only just becoming politically aware, but I was amazed that he had, somehow, come to believe that this type of harsh criticism on the public airwaves was somehow not allowed in this country. I told him that we needed more in the media to step forward, speak their minds and show that the emperor has no clothes.

He was going to go home last night and check out all of Keith's other commentaries.

and I said, "No, the guy who owns MSNBC is Keith's boss, not bush". That seemed to calm him down. He was worried for KO.

96. "Sacrifice" is a religious concept
Bush is trying to link his senseless plans with Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac, and Jesus' willingness to sacrifice himself on the cross. They are very careful how they choose their words. -- Wanet

For your posts. Keith is absolutely brilliant, isn't he? I'd love to see Bill Moyers return to t.v., too. We need more people brave enought to speak the truth. As far as sacrifice, that's an insult coming from Bush. Neither he nor his cronies have had to sacrifice anything, and have even been given tax breaks so that their war profiteering is even greater.

This is a must hear/read piece.
