"Check out" the REAL Elizabeth Edwards

Mary Elizabeth Edwards (née Anania) (born July 3, 1949, in Jacksonville, Florida) is a former attorney and the wife of John Edwards, a former U.S. Senator from North Carolina and the 2004 United States Democratic vice-presidential candidate.

Education and family

Edwards spent some of her childhood attending school in Japan, where her father, an Italian-American United States Navy U-2 pilot, was stationed.

She attended Mary Washington College then transferred, earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in English, as well as a J.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She met John Edwards when they were both law students there. They married in 1977. The Edwards are the parents of four children: Catharine (or "Cate"), Wade, Emma Claire, and Jack. Wade died in a car accident in 1996.

Professional Life

Edwards used her maiden name, Elizabeth Anania, professionally until 1996. After the death of her son and her retirement from legal practice, she changed her name to Elizabeth Edwards. She began her career as a law clerk for a federal judge, then moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1978 to become an associate at the law firm of Harwell Barr Martin & Sloan. In 1981 she and her husband moved to their family Raleigh to work at the law firm Merriman, Nicholls, and Crampton. She has taught legal writing as an adjunct instructor at the law school of the University of North Carolina and worked as a substitute teacher in the Wake County Public Schools. Much of her time is devoted to the administration of the Wade Edwards Foundation, a foundation created in honor of her late son to reward, encourage, and inspire young people in the pursuit of excellence.

Ms. Edwards deserves much respect and admiration. Please give this a kick and a rec in honor of the good lady.

17. A dear friend of mine recently lost her 17 year old son...
and I always think about the Edwards losing Wade, and just how horrible that had to be for them. It's probably the worst thing anyone can endure. But they stood together and made it through.

32. Another strike against Edwards....
for some Murikans. His wife is intelligent and has abilities and a career... as well as good looking. Murikans, at least these days, seem to like the dumb, pliant types for their political wives.

About your CBS commentary...

Have you read The Health of Nations: Why Inequality is Harmful to Your Health by Ichiro Kawachi and Bruce P. Kennedy.

Things you said in your CBS commentary reminded me of this book, which is one of the best books I've read on public policy in the last couple years.

47. I watched Elizabeth Edwards recent appearances on Hardball and on Oprah and could not
help but contrast her warmth, openness and intelligence with Laura Bush's aloofness, and simplistic parroting of right-wing talking points. Elizabeth Edwards is a breath of fresh air. I hope we see and hear more from her in the future.

50. One striking difference between Elizabeth and Laura is that Elizabeth involves her heart and soul.
Laura has always impressed me as becoming involved for purely political purposes, that her heart isn't really in it. Remember the thing with gangs, whatever it was? That didn't go very far, did it?

Elizabeth is dynamic, whereas Laura is passive. Like bush said, Laura is a lump.

I haven't warmed up to John Edwards yet, but I'm working on it. I think the 2004 campaign rounded him out a little better. Being unyoked from John Kerry also lets him establish his own presence and presidential identity.

If Edwards wins the nomination, I'll support him wholeheartedly, not just because of him, but because Ms. Edwards would be the finest First Lady probably to ever grace the White House.
