A senior U.S. official told the New York Times Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was concerned that if Saddam was not hanged quickly he would somehow escape the noose.

"His concern was security, and that ... maybe there would be a mass kidnapping to bargain for Saddam Hussein's release," he said. "He was concerned that he might somehow get free."

Rubaie confirmed that Iraqi officials had been concerned Saddam might escape justice: "The question is not 'Why the rush in the execution?' The question is 'Why the delay?'

"Some people were talking about the Americans, saying they might take him to one of these islands controlled by the United States and exile him there."

Can this get any stranger?

2. Why was Saddam worse than Napoleon?

Unlike Saddam Napoleon successfully conquered an entire continent yet his (second) punishment was lifetime banishment to St. Helena.

Is criminal justice more retrograde than that of the 19th century?

3. Only if you are a Bush who doesn't want the truth to ever come out.

Putting Saddam in prison or banished to an island would never assure that his story remained sealed. It was imperative that this happen before the Democratic Congress could get involved with Hussein's case. Protecting the Bush Family reputation is far more important than the truth or justice being served....if you are part of the Bush family.
