1. It was both eloquent and elegant. Another classy guy, they are few and far between.
You could tell how much Betty Ford enjoyed his speaking. He made her smile and that was so good for everyone. I love him too.

14. I read somewhere
that she had originally not wanted a state funeral, only a quiet one with close friends and family. Clearly having Carter give the eulogy in Michigan was her choice, and a very personal one. They were really that close. Did you see Rosalyn bawling too? It was so touching.

17. Oh yeah I saw that.
I hope that now Betty can spend some real quality time ALONE with her friends like the Carter's and her wonderful children to heal.

5. Thank you for the link.
And the opportunity to see it. You're right. It is wonderful to see two very intelligent and decent men from opposing parties who competed intensely in a contest for the presidency, become such good friends.

8. Being a jerk to Carter only serves to reinforce the indirect point Carter made about the
"long passed" era of bipartisanship.

And this did not dominate his eulogy, it was for the most part a pleasant recap of their friendship and relationship as former presidents and members of opposing parties. This reminiscence could not help but draw a sharp contrast to the current Bush/Rove/Limbaugh era, which Carter made the slightest and subtlest reference to, but the comparison couldn't escape any but the most dense and idiotic.

12. Yes. Even the way Carter criticized the partisanship of today

was done so tastefully. He seemed to be wistfully remembering the times when it was not so ugly without directly criticizing anyone in particular -- but the implication was clear.

9. This made me cry...thanks for posting
I missed it earlier...as I was working.

One of my favorite lines -- calling each other -"My distinguished opponent"

These two leaders truly had a wonderful friendship and it is most refreshing.

10. "a bipartisan era long past"

Carter laments as he wistfully recalls lunches he had with Ford during his Presidency when Ford visited Washington.

I wonder if America will ever return to times like those. I hope so.
