Can't we all just... pretend to get along at least?

In the last few weeks it has been one thread after another full of negativity.
Even threads that are started out well meaning become slug fests and opportunities to personally
insult as many people as possible. Being snarky and having a rude or demeaning quip at the ready
is becoming an art form around here.

What is going on?


In our last few weeks we have had threads that pretty much looked like this:

What's next? A thread that goes off the rails over a debate about Regular or Soy milk?

It's all crazy crazy crazy. I don't know what's going out but it seems we are more pissed off now than before the election!
What's happening? Phases of the moon? Something in the water?

We need to get happy people!! Or else we are in for a HUGH!!!1 problem- and we are totally screwn!!

Seriously, though, I was considering making a post just like yours about 2 hours ago when I was reading thread after thread that was nothing but infighting, even when the main topic was something that most of us could probably get behind.

We are contrarian. We play the devil's advocate. Sometimes we get bogged down bickering and bitching.

At least we don't all just fall in lockstep like the sorry group of unthinking drones who constitute our opposition.

By the way. One of the beauties of DU is that there are so many diverse opinions under one tent. The pitfalls of course are that passionate subjects fuel passionate discourse and some people's passions do get in the way of civilized discussion. But you know what? If it bothers you so much, just ignore those threads. I do not believe in playing pretend.

I truly believe there are people here who intentionally post stuff to piss off people which throws any dialog out the window.

When they leave, then maybe real discussion can be the norm again and we can respectfully agree to disagree when it happens.

Pre-midterms were a time to rally around our candidates and most of us worked tirelessly to make that all happen. We all wanted a democratic congress...and we got it. There was complete unity.

We also unified around our dislike for Bush and all of his insane, unlawful policies. We have been screaming long and loudly for six freaking years about so much -- that it would take forever to list it all. And for the most part all of us are on the same page there, and those that aren't probably shouldn't be here.

I don't know about any of you -- but for me, since we won in November, I don't know what to scream about anymore. I am cautiously secure in the brand new checks and balances that we will now have. I've stopped screaming and I'm now waiting for the new day which comes -- tomorrow! This has left kind of a chasm. Now instead of a unified cause, we have fractured into a large contingency of individuals with differing opinions regarding what comes next. This has also led to an uneasiness about how the democrats will perform.

The 2008 presidential race on the horizon has added to the division, and it may get worse before it gets better -- but I'm confident when we pick a nominee we will unite.

We are a big tent, and while democracy may sometimes sting because of all of the different opinions...it also will unite us when we need to again.

Just my opinion.
