could this be the Conyers/Pelosi impeachment strategy? . . .
in order not to appear vindictive or "purely political," both have announced that impeachment is "off the table" . . .

however, any number of committee chairs have announced investigations into various aspects of the BushCo conspiracy . . .

now, both Conyers and Pelosi KNOW that some of these investigations are going to uncover things that can only be seen as impeachable offenses . . .

at which time, they will reluctantly go before the American people and say something like . . .

"We really did NOT want to impeach these guys -- but the information in these reports leave us no choice. It's what our Contitution demands. It's what the American people deserve." . . .

just a thought . . .

2. air out enough dirt and the country will scream( one hopes) forq
impeachment and the dems are off the partisan hook. free to impeach because , after hearing about the rotten stuff cabinet mebers have done, and then their staff, and on up the line, it will be demanded on the front page of newspapers from Calif. to New Hampshire.

3. I don't get it though, Conyers never was one to kowtow to the leadership
With his basement hearings, investigations and reports. It just doesn't make sense for him to stop now that he has the power to demand answers and demand material

5. it's probably BECAUSE he's been so adament about BushCo . . .
to the Repugs (and therefore to the media), any attack on BushCo coming from Conyers would be suspect, and reported as such ("He's always had this vendetta!") . . . if the evidence comes from somewhere else, though, it lets him off the hook . . . if he denies that he wants impeachment, but is then "forced" to take action by circumstances "beyond his control," he'll be taken a lot more seriously, imo . . .

7. That's the snag in my own mind too....Conyers has been a bulwark of courage here..
and now he seemingly folds? Unless, as the OP suggests, it's all part of a grander plan. I could live with that.

4. I've been saying wait for the investigations.
That is where the impeachment will become a legit action. Just to go off the deep end is pointless and silly. doing investigations lets info come out over a period of time and the people will then demand impeaching.

6. The Actual Call for Impeachment, When it Comes, Will be Bipartisan
It will take a broad consensus across both parties to remove Bush** and Cheney from office.

Such a consensus had been achieved at the time Nixon resigned. That is WHY he resigned.

Until then, investigate.

13. and would be as a result of the investigations the OP refers to -
if the pubic becomes not just unsettled - but fully disgusted, or worse a bit fearful by what is learned - than a bipartisan call for impeachment would become inevitable.

9. Supposedly that's what they meant by
Edited on Thu Jan-04-07 07:14 AM by rock
"impeachment is off the table". So they weren't running on an impeachment ticket but an investigative ticket. Now if the police investigate you and there's evidence that you've comitted a crime what naturely follows?

On edit: Notice Pelosi didn't say they wouldn't impeach bush* and gang just that impeachment was off the table (why else the rhetoric if she simply meant "we won't impeach"?)

10. Thats the way I see it
let the process work as it is intended. Plus why tip them off before they even get in position to stop them from destroying evidence, and this crew will be destroying evidence, we seen that with saddam a few days ago, thats what that was all about, silencing a voice. more to come today

12. You don't want to appear biased when the evidence suddenly turns up
Staying fair minded allows them to be truly angered when they find the smoking guns.

14. and there are many, many smoking guns to be found
the question is how pugnacious the dem committee and subcommittee chairs and committee staffers are at fighting for information from the exec branch and are brushed off and their efforts are repeatedly stymied. Back in 2002, Sen Lieberman spoke tenaciously (threatening to subpeona) per Cheney's 'energy task force' - but didn't push and act in a way that was ever likely to get information (not that this is a surprise... but am pointing out the example not that particular personality.)

16. Exactly the point
The first step is investigation. Why stop at just lopping off the head of the weed. They need to get it all the way down to the root. Bush sitting in office is the single greatest problem the right and the NeoCons have right now. Hold him in place and investigate every single thread that leads from his nest.

18. After good investigations...
the TRUTH, of many crimes, will be exposed FINALLY and the American people will DEMAND these criminals be removed from office. I agree with many of the posters on this thread. I'm so excited today with even a glimmer of hope for exposure of these bastards!
